As a co-editor of this volume, I should explain what this book is and is not. It is a book on historical Jesus discussion. It is not a book that uses theological arguments or categories (as legitimate as those can be) to make its case. This means we chose as a group to play by the rules of that discussion, engage it on those terms, and show even by those limiting standards that certain key events in the life of Jesus have historical credibility. So in this discussion one does not appeal to inspiration and one is asked to corroborate the claims in the sources before one can use the material. This is what we did, with a careful look at the historical context of 12 central events. To be accurate, the article by Webb accepts the resurrection as a real event, but argues for a limitation on what history (at least as normally practiced today) can say about such events. The problem here is with what history can show, not with the resurrection as an event. Many working in historical Jesus study take this approach to the resurrection. I prefer to argue that the best explanation for the resurrection is that it was a historical event since other explanations cannot adequately explain the presence of such a belief among the disciples. Webb explains these two options of how to take this in terms of the historical discussion and noted that participants in our group fell into each of these camps. Some people will appreciate the effort to play by these limiting rules and yet make important positive affirmations about Jesus. Others will complain by asking the book to do something it was not seeking to do.

One of the Best Books Available on the Historical Jesus

I have spent a lot of time with this book, and it is a treasure.

The goal of discussing the life of Jesus according to the rules of typical modern-day historical method is to allow a discussion with those who would not accept the privilege that believers give to the New Testament. That is to say, the contributors to this volume accept a higher burden of proof than an attitude akin to "The Bible says it; I believe it; that settles it."

What is so fascinating and encouraging about this books is the high view of Jesus that can emerge even from this more demanding level of expectation than a Christian would normally adopt. If you want a detailed argument for the core of who Jesus was, all in historical terms that demand no prior faith commitment to accept, this book is for you.

Considered by many the greatest of the classic Greek tragedies, Oedipus Rex is Sophocles' finest play and a work of extraordinary power and resonance. Aristotle considered it a masterpiece of dramatic construction and refers to it frequently in the Poetics.
In presenting the story of King Oedipus and the tragedy that ensues when he discovers he has inadvertently killed his father and married his mother, the play exhibits near-perfect harmony of character and action. Moreover, the masterly use of dramatic irony greatly intensifies the impact of the agonizing events and emotions experienced by Oedipus and the other characters in the play. Now these and many other facets of this towering tragedy may be studied and appreciated in Dover's attractive inexpensive edition of one of the great landmarks of Western drama.

Tip-top commentary, amateurish translation

This Oxford translation of "Oedipus the King" is a collaboration between Stephen Berg, a poet, and Diskin Clay, a classicist. It offers excellent commentary, including an interpretive introduction, notes explaining obscurities, an appendix on Greek drama, and a glossary. The translation itself, however, is quite different: the dialogue is given in short, clipped sentences, and the choruses in unpunctuated free verse. Here is Berg's version of the choral lyric from "Oedipus" : "just now / from high snowy Parnassus / the god's voice exploded its blazing message / follow his track find the man / no one knows / a bull loose under wild bushes and trees / among caves and gray rocks" (p. 45). Berg's explanation for this style is that he wants to reproduce the effect of "broken song," and indeed this broken syntax looks much like the Greek on the page. This approach, however, sometimes sacrifices definition and intelligibility -- as in this passage, especially if the words are going to be spoken rather than read.

This play truly is a tragedy..It's a bit sick and twisted as well if the reader understands old English. Laius is told by an Oracle that he will be slain by his son. Oedipus, is told some years later, that he will slay his father and marry his mother. Oedipus leaves his parents and travels far to avoid this prophecy from coming true.

What I liked best about this play, is that it shows that even when one tries to avoid something, sometimes that thing just can't be avoided. The Fates are twisted and play sick games and this play just makes that all the more clear. It centers around Apollo as the god to look to, since Apollo was known to have the best seers in all of Greece, and it's two of his Oracles that deliver the tragic prophecies.

The story is truly sad and it's a bit depressing when the reader thinks of all the things Oedipus endured in his life, just for his wife who seemed to have known all along to withhold the information he sought.

I'm a big fan of the Greece myths and plays.. and I definitely want to delve more into the Theban Plays.

I was looking for a version of Oedipus that was easier to read than the archaic translations that seem to be everywhere. This certainly fit the bill - it was breezy and enjoyable. You can't beat it for a buck.

Vince Luca, 17, has a problem. His wealthy family runs the, uh, vending machine business in New York, and Vince is determined not to be part of it. Especially after a hot date is ruined when he finds that his older brother Tommy has conducted some business with Jimmy the Rat and hidden the messy and temporarily unconscious body in the trunk of Vince's car. His dad, the King of the Mob, is reasonable, sensible, lots of fun, gives great presents to his kids--and his name strikes the hearts of other mobsters to stone.

Although Vince keeps a low profile at school, his family connection brings him unwanted advantages, like the birthday Porsche that gets him arrested on stolen vehicle charges, or the football game in which he makes touchdown after touchdown because word has gotten around and nobody is willing to tackle him. Even private conversations at home have to be carried on in the basement because the FBI has bugged the house and an agent is always listening. Vince's life is inextricably tangled up with the family business, no matter how hard he tries to stay out of it. How can he show them he's serious? Then he meets Kendra, and when she innocently reveals that her father's an FBI agent--that FBI agent--it's a match made in heaven. He thinks.

The Sopranos (minus the vulgarity and violence) meets Leave It to Beaver (minus the "aw-shucks" tone and dated sensibility) in Korman's (No More Dead Dogs) brassy, comical caper. With its razor-sharp dialogue and bullet-fast pace, this tale could fly on either the small or big screen, yet it makes a page-turner of a novel. Korman shapes a believable and likable crew-despite the less than reputable profession of some. Many of the novel's conflicts revolve around the fact that the affable narrator, 17-year-old Vince Luca, refuses to become involved in the family "vending machine business." But of course, since his father is the Mob boss, and his older brother serves as their father's loser lackey, Vince cannot avoid being tainted (e.g., he lands in jail "because my sixteenth-birthday present [a Porsche] turns out to be hot"). Mom turns a deaf ear to the shady goings-on, cooking up a steady storm in the kitchen and willing "to serve a sit-down dinner for fifteen guys at four in the morning with ten minutes advance notice." Things heat up when Vince begins dating-and eventually falls in love with-the daughter of the FBI agent determined to bring down Vince's father. The boy also gets sucked into the maelstrom when he loans money to one of his father's underlings for whom he feels sorry. Funny and unexpectedly affecting, this will grab-and hold onto-even the most reluctant of readers. Ages 12-up.

Grade 7-9-Actor Max Casella effectively becomes Vince Luca, son of the leading New York mob boss, reading Gordon Korman's novel (Hyperion, 2002) which presents difficult situations and choices in a very humorous way. Despite his resolve to be a "normal" teenager and to stay out of his father's criminal activities, Vince finds himself seemingly drawn as a loan shark on a deal and must find a way to get out. Complicating the situation is the fact that he has started dating the daughter of the FBI agent investigating his father's activities. Casella's nasal, slight New York accent is perfect for this selection and draws listeners into the story told in first person. Reading at a fast clip, there is never a dull moment. Casella uses pauses and emphasis to accentuate the teenage slang. Although Vince's emotions are presented in a somewhat exaggerated manner, younger teens will enjoy the excitement and humor of the story. Casella does whatever is necessary-shouting, breaking into song, etc.-to make the narration very realistic. A great choice to motivate adolescent boys.

Gordan Korman seemed to have leaped the extra mile in Son of the Mob, I loved everything about, except the ending. Vince Luca 17, a highschool student but also a Mob prince. He recieves what every kid wants a hefty allowance, a porsche for his birthday,and basically anything he wants. Even though the stuff he gets sometimes isn't bought, example the porsche. Good ol' Dad working for the vending machine buisness, Vince's way of putting the Mafia in code, Honest Abe Luca, Vince's father, keeps Vince protected and wealthy. His family consists of many uncles , which are under his father in the uh...buisness. When Vince gets a second date, his first was ruined by a Rat and a brother, Vince and Kendra seem to be the perfect couple except thier fathers are opposites, Kendra's dad works for the FBI, that happens to be the one who is trying to put Anthony Luca into the slammer. The book sends you in twists and turns, almost like a Romeo and Juiliet story. This was favortie book by far, I'm interested to see what Gordon Korman will do next.

Vince Luca is a 17 year-old student who just wants to live the common high school life. Chasing girls, playing football, and other "normal" things are what he aspires to. However, Vince is in a rather precarious situation. His father is a mob boss and Vince wants to have nothing to do with it. His entire family with the exception of his mother, believes that one day he will come around and accept his position. Vince suffers the classic struggle of a protagonist trying to escape his family's reputation and image. However, Vince ends up right where he didn't want to be, posed by the F.B.I. as a loan-shark for his father's business.
The book "Son Of The Mob" is the perfect blend of something which, is very serious (mob-affiliation), and applying it to highschool life, something almost all teens can relate to. It is comedic excellence and had me yelling, gripped, and shaking my head at the misfortune and unexpected turns that Vince Luca takes. At every moment, Gordon Korman throws in another piece of the plot to thicken and enrich the book. Not deep by any standards, this book does have an amazing correlation to Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." Vince and Kendra, being the "star-crossed lovers," and their families of completely opposite backgrounds makes the book suspenseful and comical.

A fun, light read

Gordon Korman books are always a fun read, and Son of the Mob is no different.

With a plotline that might best be described as "Sopranos-lite," Korman gives us Vince, a 17 year old hero who is the white sheep of a mafia family, headed by feared crime boss Anthony Luca.

Like other boys his age, Vince is preoccupied with girls, unfair teachers, and homework assignments. Unlike his peers, however, Vince also has to deal with a range of ethical questions related to the criminal activity of his family. He doesn't want to partake in the ill-gotten gains of his family, but everything he wears, eats, and drives is tainted with mob-money.

Things get sticky when Vince finds out that the girl he's dating is the daughter of the FBI agent assigned to build a case against his father. To make matters worse, Vince decides to take a hand in his father's activities. In an attempt to prevent violence, Vince takes responsibility for some of the debts owed to his father by some lowlife thugs, but that puts him in the position of trying to collect money himself.

This is the first Korman book that I've read for about ten years or so, and I have to admit I was a little disappointed when I measure this up against some of his early works, such as "No Coins Please" and the Bruno and Boots series. Maybe it's just me, but some of the jokes, especially the thick-as-flies mob references, seemed a little over the top.

However, Korman has matured in several ways, and I appreciated that he was able to give a lot of competing plot lines their due space. The only exception to this was a storyline involving an FBI insider somewhere in the ranks of the Mob. This was barely mentioned early, but became the biggest climax at the end.

Korman's writing is always good for a couple of chuckles, and you know that he's not going to get preachy about social issues or anything like that. More than any other author, he reminds me of Robert Asprin, who has a similar sense of humor and a similar knack for showing that people, whether they're mobsters or wizards or what, are all pretty much the same inside.

He is among the most amiable of food writers, genial and measured; one reads with pleasure but no surprise of his delight at encountering Italy's Slow Food Society. In Antonio Carluccio's Italian Feast, he explores the traditions of northern Italian cooking. It must be said that this is of course one of the best-known cuisines in the world these days, so the fact that he gives a recipe for as universal a dish as Bolognese Sauce (Ragu Bolognese) bespeaks a serene confidence that one cannot help expecting. The recipes are a combination of traditional dishes, such as the ragu, with Carluccio's own creations and those of his friends. Coniglio San Domenico (Rabbit with Artichoke Hearts and Olives) is his own invention, yet absolutely true to tradition. So it is with Risotto con Lenticchie e Salamini (Risotto with Lentils and Sausages--apparently the original is made with frogs), Zuppa di Cardi e Polpettine di Pollo (Cardoon Soup with Chicken Dumplings), or Crostata di Melecotogne (Quince Tart), to choose more or less at random. Carluccio�s passion for Italy is infectious!

As a book that has been available in England for some time, I have sampled many of its delights. Don't be deceived by the simplicity of its recipes, for rarely has throwing several ingredients together tasted quite so delicious. Take the basic tomato sauce for example, who would have believed onions, tomatoes, basil and olive oil could have such flavour? And the Tiramisu is delicious, not unworthy of the finest dinner party yet so incredibly easy to make that a dessert for eight could be ready in less than half an hour. The book is made all the more unique by its contributors, for Antonio Carluccio has collected many recipes from Italian people like the cooking Count, Conte Carlo Maria Rocca. Whilst Carluccio remarks that "a cooking Count is not the kind of person you meet every day" this fact is not quite so astonishing as his monkfish, baked in layers of potato slices with fresh sage leaves and olive oil and parmesan, which is just divine. Inspiration is not hard to find in this book since Carluccio prefaces each of his recipes with a charming little anecdote. Whether he is describing the eccentricities of the wonderful people he meets, watching a recipe being made in a country kitchen, or picking local ingredients such as his `funghi hunt', Carluccio's passion for all that is Italy is infectious. When you finally taste the food that you have prepared, close your eyes and you might just believe that you are in a bustling trattoria in a hill town in Tuscany with a fine glass of Chianti, sampling traditional Italian cuisine at its best.

Elegant, enticing and supremely usable

Antonio Carluccio is better known in UK than he is in America, largely through his very relaxed and charming TV series. He also has a restaurant in London's West End, and although not cheap even by British standards, it is worth every penny.
Carluccio's recipes are very simple, and somehow it is immediately clear how everything works. Every ingredient is there for a reason, and he attaches very little importance to superficial decoration of the dishes. The beauty lies in their gustatory quality.
Even if you are not the world's best cook, success rate with Carluccio's recipes is incredibly high, which is I suppose the ultimate praise for a cook-book.
Carlucio insists on good ingredients, and tries to show the true essence of the Italian cooking really is: food originating from the love of life and cooking tradition that is several millenia old.
Italian food needs no better ambassador than this cheerful man, formerly a wine merchant, now living in London. Buy this book, try a few recipes, and you will be hooked for life.

This WWII novel of Japanese-American honor and patriotism begins on March 30, 1942 when more than 250 Japanese-Americans living on Bainbridge Island, in Puget Sound, Washington, are being evacuated. The process goes quite smoothly until the Army discovers that a 21-year old Japanese-American fisherman, Matthew Kobata, is missing. During their search for Matthew, two Caucasian men are found murdered on the island.

Seattle detective Elroy Johnstone has come to the island to investigate the murders, and evidence is leading him to suspect Matthew may be involved. But he is one step behind as Matthew escapes on his fishing boat. With Matthew now emerging as the prime suspect in the murders, the detective’s investigation then takes him to Seattle where another murder has occurred. This time a Japanese-American.

Complicating matters, the coroner finds that both the Japanese-American and one of the Caucasian men have identical tattoos, both on the left ankle. But what do these tattoos mean? And who has killed these three men? Matthew? And if so, why? And most important, where is Matthew?

Johnstone’s investigation will take him from Seattle’s Naval Air Station to the Manzanar Relocation Center in Owens Valley, California, and back to Bainbridge Island. And, although he doesn’t know it, the clock is ticking and a countdown is in place for an event that could result in the unthinkable taking place Toward Night’s End.

This book was inspired by a true story:

My grandfather had a dairy farm in Norwalk, California for many years. He was an attorney and like many farmers in that region, he had Japanese-American tenant farmers handle the day-to-day operations of the farm.� When the war started and the Japanese-Americans were put in camps, it was left to the land owners, their kids, etc., to help keep the farms going. A neighbor's teenager, then doing the chores that the Japanese-Americans usually did, uncovered an anti-aircraft gun hidden under a huge haystack in the barn. The Army was called and they picked up the massive weapon.

When I first heard this story, my imagination went into overdrive. How did they even get an anti-aircraft gun? When was it going to be used? Was there some sort of plan? A date of an attack and they were going to use it against our own planes? Of course, hearing the story also went against everything I have always believed - that the Japanese-Americans should not have been sent to camps, they were pro-America, etc. But then I realized that you can't put tens of thousands of people all in one category. �

What happened on that farm in Norwalk, California, did in fact happen. However, to this day, I firmly believe the reasoning behind incarcerating Japanese-Americans to internment camps was wrong. This is clear when you look back in history at the many Nisei - second generation Japanese-Americans - who served this country honorably in combat during the war.

Another Great Read!

I have read all of the authors previous books and thoroughly enjoyed them. I thought that I may have a problem with this one due to it being set in WWII, but Sargent did not disappoint. I am so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and picked this ebook up, it was a good escape from standard/usual reading. At $3.99 how can you go wrong? Anyway if you like history and mystery this is a great little read, the Japanese internment camps are a part of our nasty little history that more people should learn about. I said it before and I will say it again..."Give this author a shot, you will not be let down".

Nice Yarn that Avoids Historic Facts

I have read all of the author's other books and enjoyed them. I have not yet finished Toward Night's End, but I will. It is quite apparent that the author failed to do any research. First, he refers to the truck's transmission being placed in 'Park" which would indicate an automatic transmission. Such were not found in trucks in 1942, but then he has the driver using the clutch. The author has an officer using a radio that was clipped to his belt which after use he returns to its holster. Radios in 1942 were simply not of a size that could be carried in a holster attached to a belt. He then has the officer take offense to the use of the term 'Jap" and insists that Matthew be referred to as a Japanese-American. The term was not generally used at the time. Later when Matthew is sick the captain of the boat he was on refused to let him have penicillin. This was in early 1942 when the entire production of penicillin would have treated a couple dozen people at most. The first country to allow the civilian population to have penicillin was Australia after WWII.

The author spins a good yarn, but does allow historic facts color his fiction.

Another great book from Sargent

A WWII story about Japanese Internment, and one Japanese-American's involvement in helping America. This story, like his others, had elements of mystery, likable characters, and an engaging story line. The reason I gave this book four stars (instead of five), is because some of the sentences were a little choppy, and in some instances there was a little too much detail. However, that said, I thought Sargent did a wonderful job at creating a main character, Matthew, that was extremely likable, and I found myself rooting for him throughout the entire book. I am really looking forward to what Sargent comes up with next.

This period, she tells readers, marks the culmination of humanity’s rise to Fifth-Dimension Consciousness.

Relying on information from spirit entities (including guides, angels, and elementals), Cooper offers readers a review of the five golden ages which planet Earth has experienced since its inception. She tells us that we are currently moving into the Sixth Golden Age and goes into detail about the related events that have already occurred, as well as events which will occur in the next few decades. She introduces us to master teachers and archangels that are overseeing this great human enlightenment and provides exercises and visualizations to help readers access the information that is being provided. Birthing a New Civilization

Birthing a New Civilization by Diana Cooper is a look at the current transition of humanity towards 2032. That seems like a far ways off in our futures, but it really is much closer than we think. Spiritual teacher Diana Cooper shines in this book to help get people on the right path for the next 20 years.

Birthing a New Civilization is a very interesting book that for me is more of a guide to seeing how things could be. Diana Cooper covers “The Golden Ages”, the year 2012, 33 cosmic portals, cosmic pyramids, the environment, the economy, countries around the world, and much more.

With books such as this, I don’t just believe everything the author says because she (or he) writes it for us to read. I take what I hold to be true to myself, and leave the rest. If you do this too, there many things in the book that will speak to you, while other subjects may not. For instance, I don’t think orbs in photos are spiritual beings all the time, often it is just moisture or dust, or bugs. However, some people might see it as more. I also can’t get on board thinking that Barack Obama was an Atlantis priest in a past life, as well as many other things mentioned in the text.

Although I didn’t agree with a lot of what was written, I did find this book to be a good spiritual book that I think many people will enjoy for years to come. The overall message is good, and fans of Diana Cooper will definitely love this book.

A thorough and realistic preview of coming attractions

I am a big fan of Diana Cooper and have several of her books. I feel this book is a great follow-up to her books on 2012 and The Golden Age. As I understand it Diana writes her books in cooperation with the angels, guides and her main guide Kumeka.

This book is a forecast of what is to happen in the world in the next 18 years, based on the energy as it is at the time of her writing the book, but that could always change as we do. It is not airy-fairy but very realistic of the difficulties we are to face and have already begun to experience. In the larger part of the book she discusses the large changes that will happen on the earth and within each country both political and weather related.

Then in the remaining chapters she talks about what will happen after these changes when the Golden Age is officially here and what life will be like. She says the internet will still be here but it will be far beyond what it is today. TVs will be like a phonograph is to us today and vehicles will be vastly different, and made out of different material.

According to her we can expect to see major changes beginning in 2017. In all the chapters she includes prayers and ways to increase the vibrations and help assist with the changes headed our way and even make them less intense.

I don't know another book out there like this that is so easy to read and informative.

I loved it!!!!! Must read!!

I must say, this is the first book that I have read by Mr. Coleman and it is definitely a page turner. I completed it in less than one day. I really does focus on how we as individuals make decisions that will decide our fate and test our faith. It also makes the reader look at why people do the things that they do. Abraham had a strong belief in GOD yet he participated in Malik's activities in order to make the best of the situations he was put in. He believed he was doing what was necessary to make it to what he truly wanted to do, which was to make it out of the projects. The story also points out that what goes around really does comes around no matter what.

I can't wait to read another novel by Mr. Coleman. This book really held my attention and that can be difficult to do. If I pick up a book that does not catch my attention by the first one or two chapters I will put it down and move on. I was not disappointed by this one. I would purchase this book again in a heartbeat!!!!!!!

HOWEVER NOT SINCE I READ "BLACK BOY" BY RICHARD WRIGHT HAVE I BECOME SO IMMEDIATELY INTRIGUED BY CHARACTERS AS I WAS THE FIRST TIME I READ "DO OR DIE". THIS BOOK IS THE DEFINITIVE PIECE, ALONG WITH SISTA SOULJA'S "COLDEST WINTER EVER" TO THIS NEW URBN LIT REVOLUTION. IF YOU HAVENT READ IT, YOUR SLEEPIN AND YOU NEED TO GET ON IT. IF YOU HAVE AND DIDNT LIKE IT, THEN YOU ARE A SAD CASE, AND YOU SHOULD GET YOUR BRAIN CHECKED. WHAT MR. The Best Book Ever Made

I'm going to try to make this short. Stop whatever you're doing right now and pick up this book. It's the best book I've ever read and trust me, I'm a serious reader. From the jump-off, this book grabs you and you can't put it down. I'm a medium speed reader and I read this whole book (326 pgs.) in practically 2 days with no exxageration. I even stayed up until 2 a.m. because I couldn't put it down. Also, it has an excellent ending. I'm not going to give anything away but I'll say what goes around comes around. This book is powerful (with such a sad ending) that I had to look at tv to change my mindset before I went to bed. But to summarize this...this book will teach you alot.
