About the Author
NOAH D. MANRING is James C. Dowell Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at University of Missouri–Columbia (UMC). Before joining the faculty at UMC, he worked for eight years in the off-highway mobile equipment industry. He holds ten U.S. patents for innovations in the field of fluid power. As a professor, he has received research funding from Caterpillar, Inc., Festo Corp., and the National Fluid Power Association, among others, as well as the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, and various private donors. He currently serves as an associate editor of the International Journal of Fluid Power and the Journal of Dynamic Systems, Measurement, and Control. He has done consulting work for several industrial firms including Moog Inc., FMC Wyoming Corp., Dennison Hydraulics, and Parker Hannifin.

The author of this book was my professor in the Hydraulic control systems class at MIZZOU. Therefore, I bought this book since it is the textbook for the class. I would like to say that this book is very useful in order to understand the hydraulic systems. I've got a lot of knowledge from it. Easy to understand.

Probably the Best Book on the Market for Designing Practical Hydraulic Systems form Basic to Advanced

Excellent book for understanding and using hydraulic systems and components. It is written as a textbook, but still has great examples of analyses throughout the book. This is an excellent follow-on to Merrit's book. No important concepts are relegated to "homework" problems. The author is an excellent writer and leaves no stone unturned to cover the material. Very few typos and the book's progression is logical and intuitive. The book covers three areas: fundamentals (with more depth than fundamentals), hydraulic components (not a simplistic, cursory approach like Pippinger), and hydraulic control systems. This book is worth twice the price for engineers needing more advanced design approach information.

Excellent Reference

Noah Manring was my professor for this course at the University of Missouri back in 2007.

Now, as a working fluid power/controls engineer, I still continue to reference this book regularly. There are good explanations for the different types of systems used in hydraulic circuits. The problems are good practice to familiarize the student with the types of analyses in hydraulic systems.

I highly recommend this book for student and professionals alike who would like a better analytic background on the types of control systems used in hydraulics.

What is the difference between a star performer and an average worker? From his research into this question, Kelley developed his consulting practice in productivity improvement, which focuses upon the challenge for a company to adopt a common understanding of star performance and to add as many workers as possible to the star category. The latter is the aim of this book. We learn that talented people are the company, and that companies are finally realizing that star performers are not substitutable commodities but instead are wealth-creating assets. The key to being a star performer is not brain capacity or personality, but rather an ability to function in the workplace using the author's nine strategies. These strategies are initiative, networking, self-management, perspective, followership, leadership, teamwork, organizational savvy, and the ability to persuade the right audience with the right message. Follow these strategies to be more productive!

During the 1990s, Bell Labs teamed up with Robert Kelley, a Carnegie Mellon professor and organizational consultant to study what actually made their people productive. This book is the result of a 10-year long assessment.

While the focus of the work was on productivity, they studied those who were deemed "stars" at work by peers and superiors. At the time, it was assumed that some pre-determined trait such as intelligence or personality would determine who the stars were. This turned out not to be true, and a good thing because, as Kelley identifies, since the traits of stars are identifiable behaviors (he calls them strategies) then anyone can adopt them and anyone can be a star!

Here are the 9 strategies they identified, in order of importance:
-Initiative: blazing trails in the organization's white spaces.
-Networking: knowing who knows by plugging into the knowledge network
-Self-management: managing your whole life at work.
-Perspective: getting the big picture.
-Followership: checking your ego at the door to lead in assists.
-Leadership: doing small-l leadership in a Big-L world.
-Teamwork: Getting Real about Teams
-Organizational Savvy: Using street smarts in the corporate power zone.
-Show-and-tell: Persuading the Right Audience with the right message.

Kelley wants to distinguish between what most people perceive these strategies to be and the way that stars actually implement them. For example, with initiative he points out that while average performers think initiative means coming up with ideas to help them do their jobs better, stars view initiative as taking them into the white space beyond their job descriptions. (As a side note, I was struck that his number one characteristic of initiative seems very similar to Covey's first habit "Be Proactive.")

Still, I'm having trouble with the easy jump from "most productive workers" to "star." Is the objective to be better than your co-workers so that you get promoted (and they don't) or is it to be more productive, as an individual and as an organization?

I'm not sure that it logically follows that those selected as "stars" were necessarily the most productive workers of the enterprise. For example, one of the attributes of the stars was that they tapped into and exploited the expert networks but without the experts there wouldn't be much for the stars to do. One test for a strategy is to think "what if everyone did this" and here I'm not sure this particular trait holds up.

At the same time, if these are the traits of the most productive workers then we should be able to increase overall productivity by getting everyone to follow these behaviors.

Since the behaviors seem helpful, then what I'm interested in is how would we organize ourselves so that these behaviors are encouraged and naturally arise? Now that would be really interesting.

A wonderful book to read!

You must be wondering why I use the title "A wonderful book to read" and not something else if I were to rate the book 5 stars. This is the first book that I have given full score.

I am an avid reader on performance management and the list of criteria to increase productivity and recognition is not new. However, the similarity with other books stops there. Robert E. Kelley put new meaning into the 9 identified criteria to be a star performer. He gave a new meaning to the criteria "initiative", "organisation savvy" and many others. You need to read the book in order to appreciate the meaning in the context that he had deftly written them.

I believe thoroughly based on what I read that anyone who could master the 9 criteria stated would become a star performer. However, there is a catch. Robert told the reader that you need to possess all 9 criteria and to practise them concurrently. That is a big challenge because any other management book will give you praises if you could manage to be proficient in one to two of the identified skills.

I am not discouraged by the need for all 9 skills to be practised together and so you should not be either. I am going to put what I read into practice and since the average time to see results as Robert stated in the book is 2 years, I will update my review in 2 years time.

John H., Phd Martin constructed a well-rounded neuroanatomical textbook. The material covers every anatomical aspect of the n.s. including chapters on embryonic development and vascular anatomy. The text is continuously tied in with detailed images (ct, mri, & myelin stained slices of c.n.s.). The reading material is exceptionaly easy for its class. The book gets very detailed, and will make you a leading source on neuroanatomy. Author comment: "Even though this book came out a few years back in '96, the material today is still very similar and they do not get any user-friendlier."

Excellent textbook for the Neuroanatomy student

The text of this book is quite easy to read, as medical textbooks go, and the figures in this book are excellent and easy to follow. A wonderful feature of this book is the double-page organization of the atlas portion showing brain sections. For each section, the left-hand page is an unmarked full-page photograph of the section, and the right-hand page is the same photograph with labels and borders drawn around the structures. This is much more helpful than the traditional approach that simply has a line pointing to a structure, for this approach shows the size, shape, and limits of the structure as well as its location. The unmarked photographs allow you to test yourself. I highly recommend this book for Neuroanatomy students.
