Blunt good, but not complete

The book is an excellent introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet. It actually tells you which position your mouth should be in for the correct creation of these sounds. The accents shown in this book are great for the beginner, but lack real authority when going for accuracy. Blunt is just that...blunt. The accompanying tapes are crude to be nice. They should be re-recorded for an actual production value. The source material however is amazingly good in showing the beginner the differences in sounds between English and other accents.
Woefully incomplete when dealing with African, Latin American, and regional United States accents. There is a second book entitled More Stage Dialects which would hopefully complement this problem.
Needed in the desription are the accents covered; Russian, German, Italian, French, British RF, Cockney, American Southern, etc. All in all a good purchase for the price.

Blunt is best...

I am a drama student at the University of Montana, and we are utilizing Blunt's texts and tapes in our two-year Voice and Speech program. They are invaluable to learning and understanding the various accents and dialects of several major world regions, with or without the tapes. I recommend both books and the tapes to anyone looking for specific instructions on improving their regional voice.

Very helpful

I was exposed to this book through a dialect coach who used it to help myself and others in the cast of a production of "Crimes of the Heart" (by Beth Henley) master a Mississippi dialect. It was extremely helpful, giving examples of different words with vowel, diphthong, and consonant substitutions, and plenty of practice material. I am buying the book because it was such a good experience.

About the Author
Allan Pease is an Australian body language expert, who pursued a career in sales training, and subsequently transitioned to areas of communication skills and body language. He has authored and coauthored several bestsellers including Why Men Don t Listen And Women Can t Read Maps: How We re Different And What To Do About It, Body Language: How To Read Others Thoughts By Their Gestures, Why Men Want Sex And Women Need Love, Body Language In The Workplace, and The Definitive Book Of Body Language. He has coauthored most of his books with his wife, Barbara Pease. His writing usually revolves around the topics of body language, and the results of gender differences on human communication and behavior. He was born in Australia, and started working as a door-to-door salesman at the young age of 10. By the time he turned 21, he had sold a million dollars worth of life insurance, becoming the youngest ever person in Australia to do so. His feat qualified him for the prestigious Million Dollar Round Table. He is a JCI Senator, a Paul Harris Fellow, a fellow of the Life Writers Association, a fellow of The Australian Institute of Management, and a Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has conducted research and presented seminars all over the world. He has also appeared on several television and radio programs.

This is the book I've been waiting for...
It's been around for a while but I just found it.
It's an awesome experience that what you've known it but not able to summarize it in a systematic level is in front of you as a book. That's how I felt about this book while reading it.
To me, it is a tool to organize/explain this thoughts to others. It seems like I've just found an organized summary of your point of view in this book.

I have been in sales and sales training, and have owned several businesses over the last 25 years, and I just can't believe how awesome this book is. If you are in business for yourself, in sales, or just want to learn how to comminicate effectively with ANYONE, then this is a MUST READ...OVER AND OVER! This techniques taught are not anything new...Ziglar...Hopkins...Tracy...they have all taught these methods in great detail. This book teaches the most simple method of selling I have ever seen...and I have read ALL of the books! This book gives the impression that it's about Network Marketing...and it is...however, it can be applied in EVERY business. I am NOT in network marketing...nor do I have a desire to be.

Well written, short & to the point

I am not involved in network marketing or person-to-person sales of any sort but even I could see how a person building a network could use this book.

The author starts by telling about his own early sales experience and boils down most success as persistance. I have to agree with that actually getting it done is necessary in most fields. Then he goes into his own sales method and winds the book up with body language tips for making a good impression.

As far as the sales method goes, the author presents a method of having the prospect tell you what he wants and how your product fits in with it that could help in any type of sales or persuasion.

The main thing that seems to be missing is a discussion of how to pick out which network to join up with if you don't have the luck to be approached and sold on the one that's the best for you.

Arna Skula is a clinical nurse specialist at the Children's Hospital in Reykjavik, Iceland, and has worked in pediatric nursing since 1978. It can't be helped...

While this book is a fantastic overview of all things materials and their many, many, many different methods of processing, the text is beyond dry when it comes to actual readability. A few weeks could have been set aside in the writing process to make the text far less formulaic and repetitive than it is currently, but that effort was obviously not made.

However, its impossible to fault a textbook for being dry, and that's the only reason the single star was docked. The descriptions of the manufacturing processes and their applications, on the other hand, were detailed and helpful, and the book is recommended in that regard.

Sweet deal

The book did not go in as much detail as my professor did, but that really is not that big of a problem. I plan on keeping this book since it is relatively cheap (cost-wise) and has a ton of useful information in it. I would definitely recommend this book as a shelf reference book (not to carry around since it is extremely heavy). Great book....I highly recommend picking it up if you are a materials scientist/engineer or have any overlapping field of study that concerns processing at all (every physical product requires processing).

Being a junior mechanical engineering student, this text is whats used for the lecture. I use this textbook a lot and it is very helpful: all of the processes are well explained, why they should/should not be used in situations. Also this book makes a good effort to take the raw material and mix with facts beyond just when to use a process to get you actually interested in manufacturing. For example how investment casting (aka lost wax process) allowed people to create intricate statues.

Every week a quiz was given and studying for an hour with the book an notes helped me ace it every time.

**This semester I had expected that manufacturing would be the driest class; in fact this is one of the classes that I most enjoyed. I'm sure it was partly due because of my professor but this book certainly didn't hurt.
