Here is an entirely different kind of knot book! For the first time, here are step-by-step instructions that take full advantage of color photography to teach the art of tying knots. Unlike illustrations in other books, these pictures show every step looking over the shoulder of the tier -- the way you see the knot as you make it. And when two or more ropes are involved, they are color coded so you can clearly tell them apart.

Included in addition are a section on decorative knots, a cross-reference list of the many applications of knots, and a detailed glossary. The Morrow Guide to Knots is a reliable and essential reference tool for all sportsmen and campers, homeowners, and youngsters as well.

Amazon.com Review
For anyone who's ever despaired of making a bowline knot from instructions saying "dive into the bunny hole," or illustrations showing a plain line in figure 1, a completed knot in figure 4, and a bafflement of loops in between, here is a solution. Originally written in Italian but translated into English by Maria Piotrowska, the Morrow Guide discloses the secrets of knots for sailing, fishing, camping, and climbing, with clear instructions and 647 color photographs that take the mystery out of the swivel hitch, the grapevine knot, the knotted sheepshank, the Spanish bowline, the stopper knot, and 68 more.

It certainly covers a wide range of knots although I found it generally lacking for focusing on the most critical utility knots. In some cases they are there, although they are sometimes difficult to locate and obfuscated by other interesting, yet esoteric, knots.

The Virtual Window: From Alberti to Microsoft (MIT Press), by Anne Friedberg

As we spend more and more of our time staring at the screens of movies, televisions, computers, and handheld devices -- "windows" full of moving images, texts, and icons -- how the world is framed has become as important as what is in the frame. In The Virtual Window, Anne Friedberg examines the window as metaphor, as architectural component, and as an opening to the dematerialized reality we see on the screen.

In De pictura (1435), Leon Battista Alberti famously instructed painters to consider the frame of the painting as an open window. Taking Alberti's metaphor as her starting point, Friedberg tracks shifts in the perspectival paradigm as she gives us histories of the architectural window, developments in glass and transparency, and the emerging apparatuses of photography, cinema, television, and digital imaging. Single-point perspective -- Alberti's metaphorical window -- has long been challenged by modern painting, modern architecture, and moving-image technologies. And yet, notes Friedberg, for most of the twentieth century the dominant form of the moving image was a single image in a single frame. The fractured modernism exemplified by cubist painting, for example, remained largely confined to experimental, avant-garde work. On the computer screen, however, where multiple 'windows' coexist and overlap, perspective may have met its end.

In this wide-ranging book, Friedberg considers such topics as the framed view of the camera obscura, Le Corbusier's mandates for the architectural window, Eisenstein's opinions on the shape of the movie screen, and the multiple images and nested windows commonly displayed on screens today. The Virtual Window proposes a new logic of visuality, framed and virtual: an architecture not only of space but of time.

Review

"The digital revolution has globalized a word and a nation that Leon Battista Alberti first translated from the realm of building to that of representation in 1435. anne friedberg's wide-ranging and masterly book shows that the recent renaissance of Alberti's 'window' is neither coincidence nor simple homonymy. From linear perspective to moving pictures to split screens, from see-through to light-receiving and light-emitting devices, Friedberg brilliantly demonstrates that the virtual window has been the most successful single tool for mimesis, command, and control in the history of Western civilization."

(Mario Carpo, Ecole d'Architecture de Paris-La Villette)

"Unlike most theorists of digital culture, Anne Friedberg brings a deeply historical perspective to the visual metaphors of our wired world. The Virtual Window charts transformations in visual knowledge leading from Renaissance perspective to today's computer desktops by tracking shifts in the physical and philosophical meaning of 'windows.' Its long view offers an important methodological model to media studies and art history alike."

(David Joselit, history of Art, Yale University)

This is an enthralling account of the theory and practice of using windows and screens as a visual metaphor.

(Philip Calvert The Electronic Library)

The Virtual Window is, quite simply, brilliant. Even as Friedberg employs an interdisciplinary historical sweep that most scholars would be incapable of, she offers grounded and very tightly focused discussions of specific theories and visual practices related to the use of windows and screens from the Renaissance to the age of new media.

(John Caldwell, Professor, Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media, University of California, Los Angeles)

What does it mean to be alive..?
By James S.
Our eyes and sight, our consciousness and thoughts, our inquisitiveness and knowledge... form both the scene and content as well as the frame and window... of our visual world. Without these windows, would we be capable of focusing upon either the broadness or the fine granularity, the details, of everyday life? Prof. Friedberg prods our underlying assumptions and taken-for-granted awareness of what it is to be alive.

Great text book
By Meredith Ekberg
Although I have yet to completely read this book, I have read a few chapters and am finding it very interesting and easier to read than a lot of the assignments for Space and Representation Art History class. It works as a great survey text, the introduction lays out exactly what she will be covering and it progresses in a logical manner. Friedberg's analysis of Alberti's window were particularly intriguing. I recommend this for anyone interested in the development of space and virtuality.

Debriefing the President: The Interrogation of Saddam Hussein, by John Nixon

In December 2003, after one of the largest, most aggressive manhunts in history, US military forces captured Iraqi president Saddam Hussein near his hometown of Tikrit. Beset by body-double rumors and false alarms during a nine-month search, the Bush administration needed positive identification of the prisoner before it could make the announcement that would rocket around the world.
At the time, John Nixon was a senior CIA leadership analyst who had spent years studying the Iraqi dictator. Called upon to make the official ID, Nixon looked for telltale scars and tribal tattoos and asked Hussein a list of questions only he could answer. The man was indeed Saddam Hussein, but as Nixon learned in the ensuing weeks, both he and America had greatly misunderstood just who Saddam Hussein really was.
Debriefing the President presents an astounding, candid portrait of one of our era’s most notorious strongmen. Nixon, the first man to conduct a prolonged interrogation of Hussein after his capture, offers expert insight into the history and mind of America’s most enigmatic enemy. After years of parsing Hussein’s leadership from afar, Nixon faithfully recounts his debriefing sessions and subsequently strips away the mythology surrounding an equally brutal and complex man. His account is not an apology, but a sobering examination of how preconceived ideas led Washington policymakers—and the Bush White House—astray. Unflinching and unprecedented, Debriefing the President exposes a fundamental misreading of one of the modern world’s most central figures and presents a new narrative that boldly counters the received account.

Review
"A damning indictment of the perversion of a major intelligence service by little minds inside and above it."–The Times of London

“That a CIA officer should hold power to account in a memoir is unusual, and patriotic.John Nixon has done so with insight and style.Debriefing The President is a page turner of historical consequence — excellent news for the republic in treacherous times.”–Nick McDonell, author of Twelve and The End of Major Combat Operations

"Nixon captures the psychological give-and-take of these exchanges [with Saddam Hussein] with gripping readability...and he describes the resultant verbal sparring with a sharp ear for nuance."– Steve Donoghue, The Christian Science Monitor

"Mr. Nixon, the first C.I.A. officer to interrogate Hussein after his capture in December 2003, reveals gobsmacking facts about that deposed Iraqi leader that raise new questions about why the United States bothered to invade Iraq to oust him from power. These details will likely appall Americans who have watched their nation’s blood and treasure wasted in Iraq ever since…. More broadly, Mr. Nixon offers a stinging indictment of the C.I.A. and what he sees as the agency’s dysfunctional process for providing intelligence to the president and other policy makers…. Mr. Nixon’s book comes at an extraordinary moment, when President-elect Donald J. Trump is already at war with the C.I.A….“Debriefing the President” will add fuel to the fire of the Trump-led criticism. It will also send a chilling warning to anyone counting on the C.I.A. to stand up to Mr. Trump once he is in office.” – James Risen, The New York Times

“Gripping…Nixon’s book, Debriefing the President, gives more ammunition to the skeptics; indeed, some of its contentscan only be described as sensational.” – John Cassidy, The New Yorker

"Afascinating glimpse of the "tough, shrewd, manipulative" leader and his views on the U.S. invasion, Iraqi history, and his own role in the Middle East...An intelligent and readable postscript to the Iraq War that will be valuable for future historians."
--Kirkus (starred review)

At the CIA, I lived and breathed Saddam
By Bassocantor
DEBRIEFING THE PRESIDENT is an informative look into the life of a senior CIA analyst, John Nixon, who happens to also be the one who debriefed Saddam Hussein. When he was first confronted with the dictator, Nixon was amazed. Nixon was introduced as "Mr. Steve."

Although he spoke cordially with Hussein, the author makes it clear that he wasn't fooled; he knew exactly what this man stood for: "He was a ruthless dictator who, at times, made decisions that plunged his region into chaos and bloodshed." And, "Saddam was tough, shrewd, and manipulative."

The author explains that for interrogating Hussein, he was given a $75 gift certificate to a local Italian restaurant!

Nixon believes, like many others, that the U.S. effort to capture the dictator was misguided, and came at too high a price. Looking back, it just seemed not worth it: "In hindsight, the thought of having Saddam Hussein in power seems almost comforting in comparison with the awful events and wasted effort of America’s brave young men and women in uniform, not to mention the $ 3 trillion and still counting we have spent to build a new Iraq."

Nixon's offers withering criticism of the Bush administration; they just didn't understand Iraq, and especially Saddam: "The United States had vastly misunderstood both him and his role as a determined foe of radical currents in the Islamic world, including Sunni extremism." Nixon sees Saddam's removal as a tragic mistake, with lots of unintended consequences: "Saddam’s removal created a power vacuum that turned religious differences in Iraq into a sectarian bloodbath."

DEBRIEFING THE PRESIDENT is a deadly serious book, but it does have a few light moments. Describing the CIA staff living in Iraq, Nixon recalls their poor conditions: "We lived in trailers, and often four or five of us were packed into each one." Longing for American food was common, and there was a single "Burger King" restaurant not too far away--they just had to make sure they weren't blown up on the way there: "Like other service personnel, CIA officers made special trips to the airport, braving the gauntlet of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) for a Whopper and fries."

Mr. Nixon expresses frustration with the marginal competence of his superiors, as well as the inexperience of his fellow analysts. The agency is not what people might think: "The CIA, like most large bureaucracies, was plagued with competing fiefdoms."

After the Iraq invasion, tons of newbie analysts were brought in, and the CIA thought they could be brought up to speed quickly. Nixon says they were simply not up to the job: "Few of them had analytic skills, and most were content to cut and paste material from previously published intelligence reports. . . “The agency foolishly thought that a good analyst could be developed quickly: "The Agency still thought it could take anyone and make him or her a first-rate analyst within a few months. I can say from hard experience that this approach simply doesn’t work."

Nixon relates his frustration with the Bush administration and their pre-conceived ideas of the situation in Iraq. As a senior analyst, he was frustrated that they stuck to their options, "No matter what the intelligence showed."

The author also has harsh words for CIA management, complaining of the "CYA" culture and just telling higher-ups what they wanted to hear. "Expertise is not valued, indeed not trusted, because experts can be wrong."

Nixon had a handful of visits to the Oval Office, to brief the president and vice-president. I thought these accounts were perhaps the most fascinating part of the book. The author's final meeting with President Bush was tense. He was asked a lot of off-subject questions by the president, who was rude to the author when he didn't quickly respond.

In this last briefing, Nixon answered the questions as best as he could, but his opinions conflicted with senior officials. Word got around about Nixon's turbulent briefing, and others in the agency seemed to avoid him: "When I walked around headquarters during the next few weeks, it was if I were radioactive."

The author has critical words, of a different sort, for President Obama. The analysts at the CIA had high hopes for Obama, and thought he would be more interested in truly understanding foreign affairs, but they were disappointed: "The new president could not understand why the government spent so much on intelligence but, in his view, got so little in return."

All in all, I found DEBRIEFING THE PRESIDENT to be an interesting, informative book. The author seems to me to be a dedicated, intelligent man, who gave his job 100%, under some difficult circumstances. I thought the book was well written, and I found his narrative easy to follow. I appreciate the author's expertise on Iraq--and especially his "insider view" on the life of Saddam Hussein and his last days. I especially appreciated the author's arguments for the need to have highly experienced analysts in the field, as opposed to "yes men" who simply tell higher-ups what they want to hear. It will be interesting to hear the reaction from those who were the object of this book's criticism

Much more than questioning a despot
By Oso Sam
BOOK REPORT ON THE BOOK ENTITLED: DEBRIEFING THE PRESIDENT – The Interrogation of Saddam Hussein. - by: John Nixon

I highly recommend this book to persons who have an interest in our government, whether they are conservative or liberal. The stupidity of our relations with foreign governments, especially the complete ignorance of our leaders about and with middle east policies, Israel and the terrible mess in Iraq and Syria.

Other very good reviews have covered this book very well, so this will not just be a repeat what they had to say, but rather more about the background of the workings of our intelligence community.

This book is much more than the questioning of Saddam Hussein. In fact I found the rest of the book more edifying by covering the inside workings of our “so called” intelligence departments and their relationship with various Presidential administrations. I already knew that the top YES men in our intelligence services were only giving information that supported the opinion of the president, especially the Bush/Chaney administration. Now with this book we have information of just how far this has gone with all of the administrations.

As in most government positions the top men seem to spend more time watching their backs, and coddling to the President, than giving a true answer about dangers and our well being. I was tempted to give more exact examples, but then I decided that others have done a fine job covering this and if you are really interested in knowing what is going on, and what to look out for, in the coming administration, then you owe it to your self to read this book.

It is true that Saddam Hussein was a despot and most of what was said, is true about him. However we could have learned something from him, and about the Arab States, if we had spent more time listening, instead of running around looking for non existent WMD's and other excuses for being in a country where we did not belong. The Arab world is not at all the same as we in America seem to think, and we will never be able to know the truth of this without studying or living among them.

I fear that with the attitude of the incoming President we may be back in this, or worse, if we are not more careful in our intelligence and attitude. Question what you read or hear, study and speak out. Transparency in our government, many times is a myth.

This book, even if you feel it may be a bit of an axe grinding, has much truth in it, which becomes apparent in it's pages, especially the final chapters, and it is as even handed politically as I have seen in any exposure of our government. I feel that this book is a good place to get us started and asking questions.

I Am Sorry Saddam
By Ninos Youkhana
As an Iraqi citizen who lived about 18 years under Saddam's Regime, I must say to John Nixon: "Thank you very much for writing this book. This book is for the Iraqi people to know, and for the world to witness, and for those who care".

I agree with the John's finally analysis, the removal of Saddam was a mistake. I wrote a blog on that title: I am sorry Saddam…A nation longing for leadership or dictatorship? please google it, and read it. I explained how I changed my opinion on Saddam and more.

The book finally put an end and gave answers to many of the rumors I grow up hearing about it.

Seriously, thank you John!

Exhilarating And Captivating, Just Want I Was Looking For!
By David
This is truly an extraordinary tale and my mind was utterly blown by the magnificent imagination of Emile Leon. I can tell that this wasn't a book that was written in a short period and you will be drawn in by his mesmerizing style of writing.

There is not a single dull moment and the story had my mind wandering in all types of directions that triggered a sense of literary intoxication. I wish more books could be written like this and I can't wait to read more by the author in days to come.

I would get this if you want a taste of action-packed historical fiction or even if you just want to read something that will take you for the ride of your life.

This is a story that will show you Rome like you've never seen it and your going to love every moment of it!

On Armor (Military Profession), by Bruce I. Gudmundsson

On Armor tells three important and interconnected stories. The first is a tale of a technology, in particular, the rise and fall of the main battle tank―a type of armored vehicle that came to dominate land warfare in the middle of the 20th century but is now obsolete. The second is a history of ideas. The problem that armored vehicles created for 20th-century armies was as much about concepts of operation as it was about technology. Those who got the philosophy right did well. Those who lacked either the imagination or the intellectual capital to understand the rapidly evolving potential of the armored vehicle failed miserably. The third story is one of organization. Gudmundsson pays particular attention to how armored vehicles were combined with other forces to form an extraordinarily rich variety of units and formations. He also comments on the current and future roles various types of armor will play on the battlefield.

The main battle tank is probably the single most important fighting vehicle of the 20th century. At the same time, as Gudmundsson makes clear, it is only one of the many different types of armored vehicle that have played an important role in recent warfare. Neither the past glory nor the current obsolescence of the main battle tank can be understood without reference to vehicles such as the armored car, assault guns of various kinds, armored engineer vehicles, and armored personnel carriers. This text also explores the role that mobile operations in World War I played in fostering the development of armored warfare; the rapid decline of the French Army from its highpoint as the leading tank army in the world; the role that weapons other than the tank played in the rise of the German armored force; and the relationship between British ideas of armored warfare and the growth of the American armored force in World War I.

Review
"On Armor is a fresh look at the rise of mobile forces in all their diversity: not just tanks, but armored cars, assault guns, and motorized infantry. Another excellent work by Gudmundsson."-Rob Citino, author of Blitzkrieg to Desert Storm

.,."Unlike most books on this subject, Gudmundsson's absorbing study examines not only the tank, but armored vehicles in their many varieties, to include infantry carriers, self-propelled guns, and armored cars. Getting beyond a narrow focus on technical specs, he offers keen insights on doctrine, organization, training, and battlefield employment. On Armor combines sophisticated analysis with powerful narrative scope. It captures how armies historically have sought to balance the eternal tension among firepower, mobility, and protection. Simultaneously, it takes readers on a breathtaking sweep through the mud of Flanders and the sands of the Western Desert, across the Russian steppes and the north German plain."-Colonel Alan Cate, US Army (Retired)

About the Author

A View from a Different Place
By John Matlock
There are a large number of books available that describe every conceivable type of armored vehicle. Comparisons can be made of the size, armament, speed, weight, etc. of the German Mark IV and the Russian T-34 or of any other.

Much less common is discussion on what the various armies did with not only their tanks, but how they interfaced with armored cars, infantry, self propelled artillery, etc. This is a book on the ideas, problems and opportunities that armor made possible for 20th century armies. The abilities of the generals to organize their armies to get the most out of the equipment was as important a story as the speed, size, etc.

From this it is a logical extension to make some predictions as to what armored forces will look like in the future battlefield.

A very enjoyable book that looks at history in a slightly different way.

By Kelvin Chan
The content of book is unbalanced. Too little on post WWII period. The three chapters on German armored organization is excellent and enable us know deeply on German panzer division and remove some traditional but incorrect view e.g. The reduction of one tank regiment in Panzer division is bad thing in traditional view but author adjust this. But during the cold war, only some about Middle East or Korean armored warfare but nothing on US armored division or Soviet tank/motor rifle divisional organization. It is disappointing.

Excellent work on the subject of armor.
By Stone Dog
Another excellent work by Bruce Gudmundsson. This is an excellent work, not on tanks and armored vehicles exclusively, but on the *doctrinal* thinking processes that produced different types of armored vehicles and their application. This work should be seen from that standpoint.

Gudmundsson covers the unique and often odd beginnings of armored warfare. For example, most early armored fighting vehicles in WWI were developed and crewed (by varying degree) by *naval* personnel! Mr. Gudmundsson explains the phenomena from a doctrinal standpoint.

He covers not simply the Germans in the interwar period, but also the French and the Soviets - in most works, these are usually ignored or overshadowed by discussion of the Germans. Yet, operationally speaking, people such as Mikhail Tukhachevsky in the USSR were probably ahead of the Germans in the use of armor and mobile units.

Mr. Gudmundsson does an excellent job of touching on armored vehicles other than tanks such as armored cars and assault guns, as well as other forms of accompanying mobile forces using half-tracks, motorcycles, trucks, etc.

Some may wonder why post WWII armor isn't covered as well as that during WWII. The answer is that nothing *doctrinally* had changed. In the Arab-Israeli wars, for example, nothing was done that hadn't been seen in WWII. If one wanted to, one could look at the 1967 conflict with Israelis as Germans and the Arab forces as the French in May 1940 and the comparison wouldn't be too far off the mark!

I would have liked for Mr. Gudmundsson to have expanded his last chapter on the future of armor. I personally think that armored vehicles must become lighter and go back to wheels in order to stay relevant in the future. This is a good work and it should be in the library of every serious student of armor of warfare in the 20th century.

Monster Erotica at its Best
By Sammy Loves Books
5 Stars for Monster Sex Erotica

So, what exactly is a Pond Beast? He's a sexy beast with webbed fingers and feet. If his fins and gills don't turn you on, his vibrating fingers will make you see stars.

Oren's more likely to tell a lie than the truth. So when he adamantly demands that his friends come to his home to spy on the Beast living in his pond, they come along just to prove him wrong. Of course the beast isn't there and Oren's friends literally have to drag him out of the water and force him back into his home. Genevieve is covered in mud and grass after all this craziness and decides to take a swim to clean off.

So what starts out as a relaxing swim turns into a night of pleasure as the Pond Beast makes his intentions know. This pond beast never learned that saying, "No means No", but he apparently has learned some mad sex skills as he brings Genevieve to pleasures she never imagined were possible.

This monster book was very entertaining and well written. The Pond Best had mad skills with his vibrating fingers and "ribbed for her pleasure" member.

A MUST READ for Monster Erotica Fans!! I also want a sequel!!

Roman Catholic will like it!! I'm not to sure for others though :/

It is a average book, there are a lot of things explained by it, such as the gospels. People close to god, and important people throughout history such as Jesus Christ or Moses[the guy who went to Mount Sinai to retrieve the Ten Commandments from god to have some rules in Israel] I learned that from that book. However they do not tell you what the new and old testament. It is the good book once in a while.

Enjoyable start, awful disjointed middle, decent yet random ending.
By Van
Overall the book was rather weak, with a bit of action at the end but not too many other redeeming qualities. The writing style became very disjointed during the middle of the book (much like my review) and never seemed to correct itself. Besides that, the characters were fairly boring, and there was too much wizard glorification for my tastes. The book ends with somewhat of a resolution (if any), but just enough loose ends to leave the reader curious about the next book. If not for the hefty price tag of what might also be another disappointed book I'd pick it up myself.

I enjoyed reading the beginning of the book which dealt with some restless youngsters desiring the life of an adventurer, as well as all the wise-alec quips Florin was giving Narantha. However, my enjoyment of the book came crashing down after the daring rescue, and the start of their actual adventures.

That's not to say the beginning was perfect either. There were plenty of parts where I couldn't help but roll my eyes as all the side characters were singing Florin's praises. It goes a little something like this:

S - Man I wish we could go on an adventure
J - Yeah I bet Florin McAwesomesexypants is on an adventure right now
I - Yeah, since Florin's so awesome
J - And Sexy! I think I'll waste a few paragraphs pining for Florin while I stare at the moon and weep bitter tears because my worth can be measured by the number of times I cast magic missle. {Which happens thrice, if that)
S - I wish I could be like Florin.. Unfortunately, I am but a mere sham of a priest that will be delegating into the side character role with nothing to do all day but crack jokes with my equally useless priest friend.
I - Having no effect on the convoluted story guarantees you'll live on to the next book.
Ghost of dead side characters - Boo! Hiss! Boo!!
S - Fair enough!

Not that the borderline important side characters don't have reason to worship him or anything. He's in the Odysseus class when it comes to the amount of women he beds even though he's supposedly has a nobleborn sweetheart, oh well. Then again the majority of the characters in the book end up being very promiscuous so I suppose it's too big a deal.

Afterwards, they're to explore the Haunted Halls of Eveningstar which their group was named after. Not that they spend much time there, nor do you the reader have much of a chance to understand what's going on let alone make a mental image of the place. It's around here that I felt the writing was really falling apart, it was hard to tell who was moving where, and why. Furthermore, at this point you've got about 3-5 people constantly spying on them for their own petty schemes, many of them almighty wizards whose interest in them isn't the least bit well defined. One of them never being revealed throughout the book, although I'm sure he'll make an appearance later in the trilogy.

***Minor vague spoilers ahead***
The constant scrying and scheming continues throughout the book and leads you to boredom, since you, the reader, realize that the Swords of Eveningstar are little more than rats in a cage. They end up in a town named Arabel later on where they manage to piss off every guardsman and evil crime organization agent in sight at no fault of their own. Then proceed to jump through a plethora of portals defeating some wizard who was weakly introduced earlier on. They didn't defeat him due to their own merit of course, only due to the intervention of some powerful wizard who decides to mess with his subordinates wizards plans and conveniently let the adventurers live. More of this continues with all the spying schemers playing their hands until finally they get a ticket to invincible archmage tower, then ride into the sunset with the queen of Cormyr to be knighted for their lack of grand deeds or some rubbish.

*****MORE SPOILERS ALTHOUGH IT'S ABOUT AS IMPORTANT AS THESE CHARACTERS IMPORTANCE TO THE STORY OR LACK THEREOF****
The main antagonist is also killed at the end by some other minor character, who guess what? Also happens to be a mighty wizard. Add some more cameos of important FR figures and the book wraps itself up. Maybe the next book will explain why he put melting elven wizards brains on pause and fool around with the Swords of Eveningstar. Heck I'd cast him as the hero of the story if he had been keeping the population of interfering almighty wizards in Forgotten Realms down instead of mind-melting the reclusive elven why-can't-I-Just-live-with-my-cats types. Of course without those pesky meddling mages we might actually get a story about *GASP* adventurers. Particularly the Swords of Eveningstar **Double Gasp!!**

***
Well that's enough satire out of me, time for some:
Ending Thoughts
***

While I had no problem with the constant perspective shifts, it may irritate you and ruin the plot. Not that there is much of a plot, nor do any of them really come to fruition. Essentially you're reading a book about a bunch of meddling wizards who manage to have all their schemes ruined by other meddling wizards on team good guy, with a few loose ends that will likely be tied up in later books. While the book is about the Knights of Myth Drannor (formerly know as the Swords of Eveningstar) they really contribute nothing to the story, besides being tenacious pawns for a bunch of meddling all-powerful wizards. If you've ever played a pen and paper game, be it D&D or whatever, the story feels much akin to a railroading DM and a helping handful of deus ex machina. If that's what you're into then by all means go for it.

Contrived characters and plot... barely worth the read
By Andy Gray
Swords of Eveningstar by Ed Greenwood is the first book in the Knights of Myth Drannor trilogy. The second book, Swords of Dragon Fire is scheduled for release in August of 2007. Greenwood is the creator of the Forgotten Realms and as such, it seems as though he is awarded more freedom when writing novels. There are usually two schools of people in regards to Greenwood's work, you will either really enjoy him or dislike his work. There is usually no middle ground.

I must be honest; I bought this book for only one reason. One of my favorite characters, Florin Faconhand, is one of the main heroes. As with any Greenwood book you can expect to see a plethora of characters and some are the redundant `heavy-hitters' of the Realms. Please keep in mind this entire trilogy is a `prequel' if you will to things that have already happened. You get to run into characters such as Dove and Khelban. I was surprised Greenwood didn't throw Elminster into this book. For the most part the characters were just all right. Florin I enjoyed reading about as it gave some further insight into how he got where he is. I fully expect to be more fleshed out in the second and third books as well. Yet, the rest of the characters seemed really contrived to me. They were card board cut outs of the clichs you would expect to find. Their dialog was witty and funny at times, but at other times it was like Greenwood wanted the reader to make sure they understood something so he had a character recite it to make sure. The villains in this book were not well done at all. On one page Greenwood tries to make them seem all powerful, yet in the next page they are screwing something up and their plans go awry. It didn't seem real, rather it was disjointed and out of place.

The plot is typical Greenwood, and that is not a good thing. It jumps from perspective to perspective and at times becomes so disjointed I had to go back and re-read parts of it. It almost felt that Greenwood wanted to fit as many characters as he could into this book. When, conversely, I think fewer characters in a more intimate plot would have done much better. There are no less than two times when the plot shifts focus to a new character that seems so out of place within the current story that it almost shocks the reader from the story. This constant shifting of perspective makes the plot feel jumpy and jumbled together. However, I must say in the middle of the book the plot picks up and has a very good flow, but at the end of the book Greenwood decides to start jumping around again. It is not a consistent book by any means.

Guru's of the Realms will need to read this book, for no better reason than to make sure you know the whole story of Florin and his group. However, casual fans of the Realms may be put off by the things I mentioned above. This is certainly not a book I would recommend to someone looking to get into reading fantasy. In fact, this is not a book I would recommend to someone who is an avid reader of fantasy but is looking to start reading in the Realms. It doesn't `feel' like a normal Realms book.

While I have no doubt Greenwood is a brilliant man and did a fantastic job at creating the Forgotten Realms I wish he would stick to writing source books instead of novels as his novels are almost painful to read at times.

pretentious, boring dialogue/dialect.
By Sensei Mike
While Mr. Greenwood can surely design a game world, he cannot write dialogue that flows. The Reams phrases take the reader out of the story. Also, the characters' motivations are very unclear to oh hers. The author is also very enamored with aristocracy, and that comes through in his characterizations. I thought it would be interesting to see these famous characters start out, but there was too much dues ex machina for me. I won't be reading the rest of the series.
