About the Author
Shamim Sarif is a novelist, screenwriter and film director. She recently wrote and directed the motion picture adaptation of her own novel, The World Unseen. She is also the writer/director of the feature film, I Can't Think Straight, which is based on her novel of the same name. She is the author of the novel Despite the Falling Snow. She lives in London with her partner Hanan and their two children.

Lyrical Prose

Shamim Sarif appears to possess the gift of writing verse as prose and the world unseen is a fine example of this lyricism. This is not great literature but it certainly is an easy read (I read it in a single sitting), drawing you in to empathize with the characters, rooting for them to succeed. It is a captivating book and I would highly recommend reading it.

At its core is the restrained love story between Amina and Miriam, both astonished by the intensity of their feelings and the common need to break out of their oppressive worlds. It is a story of opposites - of repression and expression, questioning tradition and blind acceptance, of courage and fear, of integrity and deceit, of finding a voice and finally of choices. What really evolves from this story are these broader themes, more universal in their appeal, underscored by each of its remarkable characters as small actions either in defiance of apartheid or convention, an arcane custom or simply humor in the face of adversity. This is possibly the book's greatest strength.

Sarif is smart enough to leave an open ending relative to the era. However, there's a strong argument for a more definitive ending - one that gives the reader some greater assurance of the relationship between these women surviving.

Perhaps the movie offers some better form of closure.

Amazing!

I absolutely loved this book. Shamim has such developed characters and I love how she writes one chapter through one persons point of view, then the following in another, it really helps to understand what is going on. Its easy to follow along, and I read it in two long sittings, you won't be disspointed I promise!

Excellent - But Leaves You Hanging (Kindle Review)

The World Unseen was a great read. The writing was smooth and effortless to read. The characters were sympathetic and well drawn, including several secondary characters. The prose vividly portrays the time and place in which the characters exist, bringing it all alive within the reader's mind.

If you're looking for a typical lesbian romance though, you may not be that interested. More than one third into the book the two women had only met briefly twice. The story follows their separate lives and then eventually weaves them together. The book is nicely paced, always moving forward. But it's not a fast pace. It's more of a slow moving river as opposed to a rushing torrent.

What I truly appreciated was the glimpse I was given into the ethnic and cultural conflicts of South Africa in the early 1950's. The story takes place near the beginning of apartheid, which was a bit of an eye opener for me in terms of its timing. As Europe and North America moved towards events that would finally bring about more racial equality, South Africa began aggressively moving further in the entirely opposite direction.

The only reason that I didn't rate The World Unseen with 5 stars is because I felt the ending was much too abrupt. I'm not one of those who needs every ending to be nicely tied up and everything clear. Vague or open-ended endings have their place in fiction and it's one that I can often appreciate. But in this case I was expecting a bit more and felt teased by the author. It didn't ruin the book for me by any means, but at the final few paragraphs I was thinking, "Hey wait a minute, you can't stop there!"

Kindle Note: Unfortunately, the Kindle ebook version is a mess in terms of formatting. I am returning the book because I don't believe I should have to pay ten bucks for such a poorly made product, even if the novel itself was excellent. Near the beginning entire blocks of text are indented. After that, indents seem to go away almost completely. This makes reading a chore, especially when dialogue is involved. There are also a lot of errors like dropped words, along with a few places of funky random formatting such as a few words suddenly underlined. I will be contacting the publisher in the hopes that they will pull the ebook and redo it and then inform me when it's done. If so, I will repurchase the ebook and remove this part of my review.

Narcissistic Mothers: Proof That Monsters Do Exist

This was an excellent book. It gave me a better understanding of narcissistic personality disorder, and what children go through daily with narcissistic mothers. I'm sure all mental disorders are difficult for the family, but narcissism can be very deceiving. One minute, all seems calm and normal, and the next minute, the mother is in a rage or does something mean to embarrass or demean her children. Narcissistic mothers are not capable of loving or nurturing and their poor children go through life constantly striving to earn their mother's love. The stories are about the adult children looking back on incidents in their lives that were especially upsetting to them. Their stories are well written and heart-wrenching. Reading about their experiences helped me realize that my relationship with my own mother was pretty good. Of course, there were times when we had major disagreements, as all children do with their parents. However, I know that I was truly blessed to have a loving, supportive mother. Reading these stories helped me to appreciate that fact.

My mother wasn't just a narcissist, but she was also a psychopath. I found these stories interesting but not very in-depth and all of the mothers portrayed were addicts of some sort. The first time my mother told me she wished she had had an abortion when she got pregnant with me was a month before my 13th birthday and then many times more throughout my teenage years. It seemed that each time she found a new man to have an affair with, I became disposable, and she told me so loudly. I was not her only target and her greatest joy in life came from taking the things that people loved the most away from them. She destroyed at least two families that I know of, she destroyed several people's careers, and she left my brother and I to be sexually abused by people she knew were pedophiles. My biggest mistake was not getting away from her soon enough and by the time I was 35, she had had an affair with my husband and destroyed my family. I've spent decades in therapy and all of my therapists wonder how my brother and I lived through it all. I know I'm not the only one that has had a psychopath for a mother but the stories in this book don't measure up to really helping anyone.

Very helpful

I am the product of a narcissistic mother. She has done some atrocious things and has said some devastating things to me. I will be in therapy for a very long time due to the damage she has single-handedly caused. I am dealing, at 58 years old, with her newest scheme to destroy me...she will not communicate with me nor allow the father that I adore have any contact with me. I have supposedly done something she considers worse than had I murdered someone. This book helped me realize that I need to grow up and not allow someone else's behavior to destroy me any longer. If these remarkable women can do what is necessary to find away to deal with their personal narcissist, I can find a way also. I highly recommend this book to those who are suffering from the damage caused by a narcissistic mother. It is comforting to know you are not the only one...

a hard-boiled noir thriller with a touch of fantasy

The second in the Low Town series, this is a hard-boiled noir thriller with a touch of fantasy mixed in for good measure. A remorseless, violent and twisty story that is filled with intriguing characters.

About: The Warden, the main character, sort of rules over a squalid and drug-infested corner of Low Town. An ex-soldier and intelligence office who has fallen far from grace, he now sells (and frequently consumes) drugs. The Warden is hard, smart and extremely bitter, and he oozes cynicism.

With frequent flashbacks to the years he spent fighting for his country in a dreadful, carnage-filled war, the story starts when the Warden is summoned to the house of an old general, and finds out that the general's daughter has run off and disappeared into Low Town. She is trying to find out why her brother was murdered several years before and who was responsible for his death. Her brother was an inspirational leader who also fought in the war; and the Warden knew him well. The Warden reluctantly agrees to help but, to no-one's great surprise, the daughter too is brutally murdered.

This sparks a trail of revenge and destruction that envelopes both the guilty and the innocent - though it seems like in Low Town no-one is entirely innocent. Fuelled by drugs and old enmities, the Warden is pulling strings and orchestrating a lot of the violence, but inevitably things spiral way beyond his control as higher powers and politicians strive to achieve their hidden agendas.

John's thoughts: I like the Warden - he's a terrific character. Horrendously scarred by his troubled past, he is now a dark and dangerous man, but he hasn't quite lost his humanity and just sometimes is driven by his sense of justice. Living in a dark and corrupt world, you can almost forgive him for some of his selfishness and outrageous actions. Here the Warden plots and schemes and has to work hard to try and stay one step ahead of an ever growing list of adversaries. He mostly succeeds but regularly ends up on the wrong side of a beating. This is not a squeaky clean hero who always gets his way. MeanLow Townwhile the Warden (or Polansky) has a great way with words and many of his acidic descriptions and banter brought a big smile to my face.

In this book he is surrounded by many other interesting characters - including the Warden's giant one-eyed army buddy and business partner, the malevolent Old Man that runs the country's internal security forces, the witch-woman Mazzie of the Stained Bone, and the psychopathic young vice-lord Adisu the Damned. As these people are woven into the story, the plot twists and turns and is unpredictable - always a good thing.

Compared with Polansky's first Low Town novel (reviewed here [...], Tomorrow the Killing has less magic and fantastic elements and is a somewhat more realistic tale, albeit set in an alternative world. The war that provides a main foundation for the plot has a lot of parallels with World War One, and Polansky does a great job of describing its horrors. You now understand a lot more about what has shaped the Warden and made him what he is. Personally I like the more realistic orientation of this story and prefer it to his first novel.

If you haven't read the first Polansky novel and are worried about reading this in case it doesn't make sense - don't! This is a complete story and stands on its own two feet. I'd rate this four stars and thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes noir, crime thrillers or earthy urban tales. If you enjoyed reading Low Town, this is a "must read".

A Great Sequel

I really enjoyed my second outing in Low Town, and while the story of Tomorrow the Killing may not have been quite as good as the first novel. I again loved the mix of noir mystery/thriller and fantasy, but here there wasn't quite as much mystery to solve. The Warden knows almost everything that happened in the past, even though the reader is read mostly in the dark, but I had most of it figured out, even the big twist, which was much smaller and more obvious than the first book's twist. Instead this story has a really interesting and entertaining series of flashbacks to the Warden's military history. These parts are incredibly well written, and provide a great view on grittier realistic fantasy warfare, and all of the horrifying consequences. I would love to read an epic fantasy story in a similar militaristic vein from the author. For this story, other than learning more backstory of the Warden, there really isn't any character development, which was a little disappointing. There is some possibly interesting stuff going on with the kid the warden and his big sidekick adopted, but it didn't really develop enough, possibly because it may be the main storyline for the next book. I really enjoy the Warden, but in this book it kind of felt like he was getting beaten up way too often, and he was a bit too mean and nasty to everyone, but I guess that's just who the character is.

Overall, I just really loved reading this book, and I look forward to the series continuing. I would definitely recommend this book, and you could definitely start with this book and not be too confused, it would be okay as a standalone, but I would still recommend you read Low Town/The Straight Razor Cure first.

Another bout of fantasy crime noir

"Tomorrow, the Killing" is the second in Daniel Polansky's "Low Town" series of novels. Every bit as dark, moody and atmospheric as the first book in the series, "The Straight Razor Cure"; the book's central protagonist, Warden, remains every bit as laconic as in the earlier volume and, it seems, even more intent on self-destruction. Polansky's writing is as hard-edged and incisive as ever, and the fantasy world he paints even bleaker than the real one and yet there is something endearing and oddly attractive about the whole sorry state of affairs, too; the book is a gripping and compulsive read, with a cracking pace and a well balanced story line. If I have one gripe, it is that the author makes rather too much of the various layers of duplicity at play within his complex plot line, making it need just a little more brain power than is entirely comfortable for the frenetic pace of the narrative and making the final twist, when it comes, nothing like as effective as it should perhaps have been.

But don't let that put you off, because all in all this a great read for those who like dark, gritty (and occasionally gruesome) fantasy crime noir tales that are well spun and well above the ordinary.

The story is sufficiently self-contained for it not to matter if you haven't read the earlier volume. Highly recommended.

In Shadowtrap (aka, The Caverns of Socrates), McKiernan delivers a classic D&D quest story with the twist of a perilous virtual reality. In the sequel Shadowprey, fans of the Black Foxes get a new adventure, this time with jaunts in multiple virtual genres. The parallel story line in reality is a court hearing instead of the technology adventure from Shadowtrap. If you enjoyed Shadowtrap, Shadowprey does a great job of completing the story of the Black Foxes. If you haven't read Shadowtrap, Shadowprey isn't going to make much sense. It is truly a sequel, rather than a stand-alone adventure.

How do you prove a dream is reality in order to save those who are caught in the dream?

What a fascinating tale, a perfect follow up to the original Black Foxes story. Dennis provides us an intricate rescue adventure wrapped around an intriguing tale of what defines 'life'. The action keeps coming, the courthouse drama (yes, courthouse drama) draws you in, and Dennis ties it all together as only he can to keep the flow going at the right pace. Loved it. Once again I will be eagerly awaiting the next adventure Dennis provides us.

An absolutely wonderful follow up to Shadowtrap. A great read all on its own, but I would definitely recommend reading them in order for the greatest enjoyment. This book has all the required elements for a fascinating read: adventure, mystery, philosophical quandaries, weighty dilemmas, and just enough humor to leaven it out into a truly fantastic and plausible adventure.

Great Review for the Pharamcy Technician Certification Exam

This book is 370 pages of great information. This book has the updated PTCE blueprint and the chapters are broken up into 9 domains. Plenty of practice questions that are very helpful. However, I did find a lot of mistakes in the book.

If you're planning on taking the PTCB this book is the best study guide you will ever need! Of course I also went to school, but this book even had actual questions from the test in it, and I passed with flying color. If you can't afford the book by itself, they have an online book that has tons of quizzes and goodies.

Great for Fall 2015 Exam

My boyfriend took a Pharmacy Technician course over the summer. When he took a practice exam, he realized that the teacher taught them nothing that pertains to the certification exam and the book the class gave him was full of jargon. I got him this book due to the all the great reviews. He studied with only this book for two weeks and passed.

Franz Kafka has had an enormous impact on modernist literature, and the legacy of his Kafkaesque writings prefigures the postmodern inability to penetrate meaning and absence of stable definitions. Here, more than 800 entries offer insights into the works, characters, themes, family, friends, and acquaintances of the writer. The aim is to provide background information about Kafka's life and context, his style of writing, and the range of his involvement with the intellectual and cultural climate of his age. The encyclopedia's authors are all professors of German and have published extensively on interpreting and teaching Kafka.

The heavily cross-referenced A-Z entries vary in length from a few sentences to about a page and are preceded by alphabetical and topical lists of entry headings as well as an alphabetical list of English titles and names, which alerts readers to the German-language names under which the works are entered. Allegory, Expressionism, Free indirect style, Hermeneutics, Orient, and Paradox, among other entries for literary concepts and motifs, provide evidence of the range, growth, and development of Kafka scholarship. Entries for Kafka's works detail the composition, publication, main plot elements and themes, and critical reception. The encyclopedia also covers works not published, including manuscripts and sketches in notebooks and diaries. Some entries, generally those regarding published works and literary themes, include further reading references. There is also an extensive selected bibliography.

About the Author

Richard T. Gray is Byron W. and Alice L. Lockwood Professor in the Humanities at the University of Washington, where he teaches in the Department of Germanics. His previous books include Constructive Destruction (1987), Stations of the Divided Subject (1995), Approaches to Teaching Kafka's Short Fiction (1995), and About Face (2004).

Ruth V. Gross is Head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and Professor of German at North Carolina State University. She is the author of PLAN and the Austrian Rebirth (1982), and the editor of Critical Essays on Franz Kafka (1990). She has twice been president of the Kafka Society of America and still sits on its Executive Board and on the Editorial Board of the Society's journal.

Rolf J. Goebel is Professor of German at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, where he has been teaching German language and culture since 1982. His previous books include Kritik und Revision (1986), Constructing China (1997), and Benjamin heute (2001).

Cayton Koelb is Guy B. Johnson Professor of German and Comparative Literature and Chair of the Department of Germanic Languages at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His publications include Kafka's Rhetoric (1989) and numerous articles. He has served on the Executive Committee of the Kafka Society of America and the Editorial Board of its journal since 1988 and is a past president of the Society.

Perfect For Animation Enthusiasts

I will just start by saying that I love this book! I have a professional background in live action filmmaking, but I've always had an interest in animation as well. This book is fantastic for learning the intricacies of the process. It even has some how-to drawings inside. Preston Blair is one of the original Disney animators, working on projects such as Bambi, Pinocchio, and Fantastia. So, it makes sense that he would be very knowledgeable on the subject, but this book proves that he is also a great teacher. The layout is very simple, yet effective. With this book, anyone can learn the ins and outs of traditional cartoon animation. A must have for animators and highly-recommended for anyone interested in learning more about the process.

The essential book for a new animator

When my brothers and I were boys, long ago, our Mother purchased many Foster publications
that guided our efforts to paint and draw, and then to animate. These books were cheap,
well laid out and easy to follow. At one count we owned 25 Foster art books.
The Preston Blair series on animation were my favorites.
I happily purchased Cartoon Animation collector's series on Amazon because it
is a valuable reference. In my animation library, this is the book of choice.

There are many books designed to show animation beginners the way.
Many are pale imitations of this book, replete with characters that
look like anyone with little to no experience imagine they can draw.
And are authored by people who envision an additional revenue stream.

If you were stranded on a tiny island with a heartfelt desire to learn
animation, and your only possessions were paper, pencils and this book, and if you
applied yourself, in time you would possess all you need to draw animated stories
with attention getting movement. Of course there is more to creating animation than
line movement. But the principles in this book are timeless and invaluable.

Some reviewers here express dissatisfaction with Blair. I liken them to
the example of Bart Simpson, who, in an episode of the Simpsons, obtains an electric
guitar and within a minute or so, quits the guitar because he cannot wail on it like Otto.
You cannot skim through this book and automatically animate images.
Animation is labor intensive. It demands an eye, a gift of sorts, to draw forms that
move in compelling ways. Everyone cannot be an animator, regardless of what teachers said.
The truth is, you cannot always be anything you want to be- and excel.
But with application and imagination, you can be animating ably with Cartoon Animation by Blair.

Classic cartooning book from an animation master!

In the 1980s, when I was a Pratt student in Brooklin, I was experimenting with a super 8 camera. (Who remembers super 8 now, right?!) But with that I was able to try out the information on movement from veteran animater, Preston Blair! I love the old Disney classics, Pinnochio, Fantasia, etc. as well as the warner Brother cartoons and MGM cartoons and Blair contributed to Golden age of cartoons in the 40s and 50s! His drawings from Fantasia( the dancing hippo) and "Red" the sexy girl from "Red hot riding hood" are so inspiring to any wanna be animater! No one book can have everything you need to be a great animater and it takes a fasination with how people and animals move as well as dedication to finishing the work to improve but Blairs drawings are clear with simple direct communication! I have the original How to animate cartoons vol 1 and 2 and I have worn out the covers so it's great to have this later edition that combines the 2 books with new illustrations from this master animater! Pages 80 to 87 include drawings of a wicked witch, cute kids and a pretty heroine that are not in the earlier volumes. The witch drawings have strong "wicked" attitude with evil poses and hand gestures that say "witch!" while the heroine drawings have that pretty Dorothy damsel quality from the Wizard of Oz! I also think of Wendy from Disney's Peter Pan. Blair made what he did look easy when it certainly wasn't but the pages make the art of animation accessable and understandable and fun to draw! Pages 184 and 185 show his drawings of the Honeymooners and the character and attitude of Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton are clearly there! And we all know that the Flintstones are Hanna and Barbera's stone age version of that classic series. The pages that show run , walk, gallop, sneak cycles etc are drawn so they can be easily adapted to any character you can imagine and draw! I'm so glad to have this mint condition book to go with my earlier Blair vol1 & 2 on animation at a good low price! There is great nostalgia in looking at these techniques today in the midst of all the CGI hype! Thanks Amazon. com!
