The Only Book to Own to Help Get You Started in The Loan Business

If you have any interest in becoming a loan officer or broker... this book is the only place to start.

I have been in the real estate industry for several years and have closed over fifty million in sales in the past two and half years. I decided to make the switch to loan broker this year and having this book and Mr. Seppinni's personal help have made the transition trouble free and an enjoyable process that could have otherwise been a nightmare. I highly recommend this book!

Great origintor book

I've been a loan officer over 5 yrs now and bought this book for my new asst.Before I gave it her, I thought I would look it over, and was surpised to find a lot of information that even I was not aware of.I began my career without ant formal education and just learned on the way like most other l.o's. Everyone is always to busy to take the time to teach you anything and without a clear understanding of the mortgage business you're certain to make a lot of mistakes. This book really explains the entire mtg process in a clear way, and makes learning the business a whole lot easier.I only wish the book had been available early on in my career.I've decided to keep this book for my self and just order another book for my asst. Great Job

Good but not what i thought

This book is very good and very informative. For anyone in the mortgage business its a great text. However the title would seem to imply its more about marketing. Its really more about understanding the technical aspects of the mortgage business. They type of loans, how they work, how credit works etc. If you are looking for a great text to explain the details of the work then this is it. However dont let the title fool you. You will not find a book full of marketing strategy and techniques.

Science in the Ancient World is the second book in a hands-on, multilevel elementary science series that introduces scientific concepts using history as its guide. Of course, when the students are taught something that is now known to be incorrect, they are made aware of this fact! Because the course covers science as it was developed, it covers a wide range of topics including human anatomy, medicine, optics, heliocentrism, geocentrism, sound, music, magnets, how steam is used to generate power, the motion of objects through a medium, combustion, levers, pulleys, plant growth, plant anatomy, tree ring dating, the atmosphere, astronomy, the basics of graphing, plastics, density, water flow, friction, and erosion. Throughout the course, students learn that most of the great scientists who lived from AD 500 to the end of this time period were devout Christians who did science because they thought they could learn more about God by studying His handiwork.

Makes science fun and profitable

Hello, Mrs Andy here. I loved this course, and would recommend it for the innovative way in which ideas are presented. It also covers Biol, Chem, Physics and Anatomy so it's comprehensive. The review exercises allow you have a verbal narration for younger children or notes for older ones.

It's for children aged 5 to 12. The copious use of hands on demos/experiments made it easy to remember the concepts.

Unique and interesting study of science with a focus on hands-on learning and history!

Our homeschool group is using this course to accompany our study of the ancient world this year. Students read a few lessons a week and when they meet together do the experiments. There are a LOT of experiments! You certainly don't need to do them all, especially if you use this at home, but this feature really works well for a co-op setting. Older siblings enjoy listening/reading this interesting book, too. I'm not sure what the recommended age is, but I do have experience teaching science and would say this class would be comfortable for 9 to 12 years old but adaptable to younger ages if you're flexible and patient.

Science in the Ancient World Delivers!

How would you like to travel back in time and learn about great contributors to science like Hippocrates, Plato, Aristotle, Galen, and Leonardo da Vinci to name a few? Science in the Ancient World is the second volume following Science in the Beginning in this series of elementary science curriculum written by Dr. Jay Wile. It is a chronological science curriculum that explores important scientific concepts in science before Christ was born through to science in the early Renaissance. The lessons explain this era of science in context to the day and age in which the scientific ideas were discovered and studied and how they are viewed today. This curriculum constantly engaged our 2nd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Just as Science in the Beginning is structured, I am overjoyed that the multi-level approach was part of this program as we loved learning together. As a mother of 10, time is a precious commodity and somehow Dr. Wile seemed to know this when he designed his hands-on experiments. Most, if not all, items needed for the experiments you will find around the house. Sometimes we did the experiments multiple times because they were so much fun. (I even heard my older high school and college teens lamenting that they never had the chance to do such cool experiments.) Adding to the fun factor was a high level of learning retention! Science concepts were effectively displayed through the fun experiments, lessons, and end of chapter questions. Our children's lab books became full of drawings along with answers to key objective questions for each lesson. This home educator could not be more thrilled. The chronological study of science was very appealing as we moved through our own history study and Science in the Ancient World blended beautifully. We are looking forward to continuing our science learning adventure with the next volume, Science in the Scientific Revolution!

Stanley J. Tambiah is Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. Among his several books is "Sri Lanka: Ethnic Fratricide and the Dismantling of Democracy" (1991).

Jack Goody is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College. Recently knighted by Her Majesty The Queen for services to anthropology, Professor Goody has researched and taught all over the world, is a Fellow of the British Academy and in 1980 was made a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2004 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and he was elected Commandeur des Arts et Lettres in 2006.

Stanley J. Tambiah is the Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He received his PhD from Cornell University in 1954. He joined the faculty at the University of Cambridge, where he taught for ten years, and was a Fellow of King's College. He went to the University of Chicago in 1973, and moved to Harvard Univesity in 1976. He began field work in Sri Lanka (1956-59), the island of his birth, and and later worked in Thailand. He is the author of eight books.

A sourcebook on Thai Animism

Although this book is written for an academic crowd, it is a fascinating read that kept me interested to the end. There is so much information in this book regarding Thai animistic beliefs that it boggles the mind. It covers funerary rites, ghosts, lore, spirit houses, witches, warlocks, reincarnation, etc. The author mentions something in passing that I found to be extremely profound regarding the modern Thai Buddhist/animist fusion--that the reason so many Thais worship ghosts is because they can deal or barter with the spirits to get around the karmic hand they were dealt at birth. Since there is no escaping karma, you can bribe a ghost with an appeasement offering to help you in marriage, business, love, or whatever else. This explains so much about the mindset behind ghost worship, that I wish he would have expanded on it more--although the author does cover in great detail, the Thai cosmos, spirit world, and its relation to Buddhism. You may have to read this book more than once to absorb it all.

My favorite book on portfolio theory

There's three basic categories of quants. Structurers, risk managers and traders. Structurers don't need this book. They should go buy Hull and be happy. Every risk manager and trader in the business needs this book. When I was first introduced to this book, I figured it was more or less only for their money management businessa manual for building Barclays Index Plus funds. That is what Grinold and Kahn do for a living, and they probably wrote the book to have something to give to dumb pupils who don't know anything. The book certainly covers some of the details and models used in money management tasks. However, this book is a lot more than that. They didn't write a book about specific investment instances that come up. They write a book which generalizes well to all fields involving information under uncertainty. They don't talk much about futures or options; this really is about equities, but if you're trading in those other markets, you still need this book.

Yes, you actually do need some calculus and linear algebra to read the book. It's written for people who understand math; it's a book on *quantitative* finance -not "seat of pants" trading. Even if you skip the mathematics (and most of the heavy stuff is kept neatly tucked away in appendices, so as not to frighten the MBAs and small children), you're likely to get something out of it: at least you'll have a vague idea of what the propeller heads in the white laboratory jackets are up to. What I find most remarkable about the book is how it rewards upon rereadings. Got a trading problem? There is probably a section in this book which relates to it. When I'm banging my head on a problem, and getting no joy from the google machine, Grinold and Kahn's book often has something which at least points me to the answer. This is a remarkable quality, as the book really was, as far as I can tell, written to help out with the kinds of tasks they face at BGI.

If you're a former physics nerd, the classic physics book it most resembles for me is the Landau & L. (amazon won't let me say the other guy's name) book on classical mechanics. The clarity and density of G&K's book very much resemble L&L. Like L&L, it can be used as a first text on this sort of thing. You may prefer to get your basics elsewhere; I liked learning mechanics from Goldstein for example, but once I knew my p's and q's, I tossed Goldstein and just read L&L when I needed professional insight. G&K is like this; theirs is the book that you'll keep around as a reference once you have a handle on the basics whether you learn the basics from them or not.

Personally, I would have liked a little more meat on non-parametric statistics, maybe some overarching Bayesian framework and some ideas on backtesting, a la bootstrap resampling, but it would probably change the tenor of the book and reduce its utility for what they do at work. Still, they'll probably read this review, and if they take requests, that's mine.

Not an easy read

This book was recommended to me as the bible of active management. I attempted reading it several times, but gave up every time. Coming from a science and engineering background, I find the exposition verbose, yet lacking a ground-up derive-from-fundamentals approach. Even in the description of CAPM, I cannot tell the assumptions from the conclusions of the theory. The book is not an easy read, but I don't think that's because the subject is inherently hard.

Update: I've found "Quantitative Equity Portfolio Management: An Active Approach to Portfolio Construction and Management" by Chincarini and Kim to be a good alternative.

Update 2: Please see Timothy Falcon Crack's response to my review. Having read his books, I really respect his opinion. He calls this book "masterpiece", and he says he ended up writing another book (Foundations for Scientific Investing) to make understanding the subject easier. You may want to check it out first.

Groundbreaking

Academic financial text books have, to a large extent, focused on beta and the so called efficient market. Active Portfolio Management was groundbreaking when it was first published in 1994 as instead it was devoted to the practical process of generating alpha from a quantative angle. Richard Grinold and Ronald Kahn, today retired and at BlackRock respectively, share a history in academia, at BARRA and above all at the quant behemoth Barclays Global Investors where they both held leading positions while writing this book.

Even though the book is full of financial theory the approach is practical. The topic at hand is the generation of risk adjusted relative returns. The market returns are always the baseline and success is measured by the IR (the ratio of residual return to residual variance) rather than an academic Sharpe ratio. When I first read this book 10 - 12 years ago I didn't by any means find it enjoyable. It's thick, theoretical, filled with formulas and I was frankly not ready for it. Yet, over the years I find myself returning to the key concepts of the book over and over again. Out of the four parts the first lays out the authors' theories and then the latter three cover the practical work of a quant PM.

The claim to fame of the book is a concept called The Fundamental Law of Active Management that reads IR=IC*√BR. It states that there are two sources of oportunities to increase the information ratio. The first is the ability to forecast asset's residual return, measured by the information coefficient. The IC is the connection between forecasts and eventual returns, IC=2*(N1/N)-1 where N1 denotes the number of correct bets and N the total number of bets made. It's a measure of skill. Active asset management is all about forecasting. Success in forecasting doesn't only hinge on doing things right but also on doing the right thing, i.e. not only on the PMs skill but on wheather the pond he is fishing in is promissing. This is where BGIs quant signals come into play but also Warren Buffett's concept of Graham and Doddsville. The second source of IR is breadth - the number of independent active oportunities per year the PM have to use his skill on. IC is about the quality of investment opportunities while BR is about the quantity of investment opportunities through coverage of more securities or a higher frequency of opportunities. It is for example more valuable to be able to forecast the returns of 1600 stocks than 1100 stocks. To increase the IR from 0,5 to 1,0 one would need to double skill, increase breadth by a factor of four or some combination of the two. This additive value of further breadth requires investment opportunities to be totally uncorrelated (this favours an eclectic investment style). If a new opportunity is fully correlated to a previous one it adds no IR. Most opportunities fall somewhere in between.

Often the asset management process focuses excessively on the quality of bets versus the quantity. The concept of breadth emphasizes the negative secondary effects that come with placing limits on an investment process with an edge. It's not only that limiting the investment universe deducts IR, the implications are broader. Limiting yourself to being long only lowers IR. Placing restrictions on the amount of cash in the portfolio lowers IR, so does demanding sector neutrality in an equity portfolio etc. In reality you only need to have a very small edge, say a 0,52 hit ratio to create a great IR if the breadth is large - so don't constrain yourself without good cause.

The opening line of the book reads "The art of investing is evolving into the science of investing." In many ways the book was a precursor to today's world of multifactor risk factor models, exotic betas etc., i.e. the systematization of all the alpha signals that can be systemized - leaving precious little pure alpha for traditional active investors. In an interview Grinold stated "The goal is to replace heroic personalities contending in an atmosphere of greed and fear with compelling hypotheses subjected to hard data." This is an important book, but I kind of like my heroes.

OK but Hard

You'll find this very hard unless you are a competent math major at one of the better universities. Similar to Elliot Mendelson's text, but not quite as good. Good chapter on Boolean algebra as a
piece of pure math; Halmos and Givant is gentler, though.
Interesting topic covered: the resolution so dear to the AI crowd. Unlike most mathematicians, Cori and Lascar have time for
the way computer scientists think. At the same time, this book does not cover tableau methods (see Smullyan), natural deduction, Genzen's ideas, and so on. For pure logic at the advanced undergrad level, you're better off with Bostock.
Haven't seen Part II, so cannot comment on the treatment of set theory. This is something Mendelson and Machover already do well.
