Brilliant, lucid, cogent.

I bought this book for a graduate-level introduction to film course offered by the English department at a state university. Having never read Maurice Merleau-Ponty or much existential phenomenology at all, this book served as my introduction to more than film theory. That said, I loved it. Sobchack is brilliant, first off, and this book does a much better job investigating the phenomenology of vision than does another of hers, Carnal Thoughts, which tends to veer off into discussions of Sobchack's prosthetic limb rather than discussing film. If you're looking for an alternative to the psychoanalytic approach to film theory, one that begins with the body instead of prefabricated master narratives, this might be the approach you're looking for. If you're a professor, this book is best directed toward graduate students with experience reading philosophy and theory.

Really, Really Good!!

I read this after I read the first one, and man, this series is really good.It is very accurate to the show only getting one thing slightly out of order.The Seven also includes a preview to the next book which is nice.

The Seven- A review by a fan of the TV Series and Books

So, heres Book 2.. The Seven have been stranded for a few days now. Food starts to become a major issue, a mysterious "friend" appears to help, Eric plays more of his tricks but then really ends up in trouble, the group sends a 'message in a bottle', Blackmail comes in more ways then one.. That just a few of the things happening. A nice refreshing book series and a wonderful read.

The book focuses more on Jackson then even the show does, which is good in a way, but bad in others. It takes away from Jackson's 'mysterious' personality, but then again, show some of his thoughts.

One of the things that I noticed right away was, because the writer was different, the writing style was different. Although it followed the series well, the characters seemed a little out of character. Especially Jackson. There was also less comedy and sarcasm then the first one. The writer of the first book wrote it like D.J. MacHale would have wrote it. This style is totally different. It doesn't take away from the book, though. But, just be warned that the reading is a little different then the first.

Still a great book- I recommend it.

He is the author and coauthor of over sixty refereed publications, and has received numerous awards, including the NSF Career award. A great book for learning about real-time systems.

This book does a good job of teaching the fundamentals of real-time systems, including what a real-time system is, where they are used, etc. It quickly gets you to understanding different scheduling algorithms (like the rate-monotonic scheduler VxWorks uses), their benefits, and being able to determine if the hardware can keep up with the timing requirements.
The book contains a lot of interesting examples, starting slow with air conditioning/heating unit examples, to smart traffic lights, and on to more complicated ones such as NASA's Mars Odyssey, NASA's X-38 crew return vehicle avionics, and the Space Shuttle Orbital Maneuvernig and Reaction Control Systems.
The author does a good job of explaining complicated concepts.

Very Good!

I'm no theory nut. I wanted to know about a few scheduling algorithms. I learned all I needed in chapter 1. Now I'm not afraid of doing more work in scheduling, perhaps even what's in chapter 2.
It's math-oriented, but it's still readable by those who don't spend their days calculating the time complexities of algorithms. Overall, a very good book!

Like the Movie

I realize the movie was based on the book, but I really didn't think they would be so similar, after all the series that mdae this movie is widely known for throwing out the books plot and making up there own story. However I felt compared to Loving Evie and Diamond Girl, this movie from a book was pretty much on point. I say this because I only looked for the book because of the movie, and as old as this is most people lookng for a review probably come from having seen the movie.

The basic plot is that a model on the verge of becoming old and no longer a top model decides to check herself into rehab but is afraid she'll lose her status if she leaves, so she asks her sister to fill in for her. Her sister agrees, and ends up first fightng with then falling for her boss, who thinks hse's stealing fashion designs.

Ultimatly the movie was better for me then the book. I just didn't believe in the characters as much as I thought I would, and therefore didn;t believe in their romance. I was kind of surprised by the heroine as well, she was just so normal, I didn't see any way for her to grow, I had expected a more boxed in girl, who becomes more confident in herself, but really she didn't need to grow or change, she was fine as she was, as a reader that just isn't all that interesting. Also the end was as abrupt as the end of the movie, which I had hoped would have been better.

A good, well-written read

Amy wakes up in a strange room. She’s locked in with a freezer full of food and a wardrobe of clothes which look like her own but are new. She’s been abducted by her stalker. We know this from the start. She’s in mourning for the love of her life and bumped into a man at a gig where she sang with her friend’s band – The Butterfly Effect. He’s creepy, manipulative and she regrets giving him any positive signals. There are two people looking out for her. One is Olga, her friend from the band; the other is her late boyfriend’s best mate, a man Olga can’t stand. Amy is conflicted.

This is an unusual ‘stalker story’ in that the abduction has already happened by the time we enter the narrative. We watch as Amy works out, with horror, what has gone on in her life and how difficult it is making choices of friends. I enjoyed the tension set up in the story and Amy’s initial denials of what she eventually finds to be the truth. A very good, well-written read.

The Butterfly Effect

This is a very tense psychological thriller. Amy wakes up in a strange locked room after being kidnapped. She recounts what led to her being there from her happy life to being stalked and losing her family and friends.

I read this in just two sittings, I just didn't want to put it down as I followed Any into her spiral of despair and how she planned to get out of it. The story is told in Amy's first person, so we are introduced to her past life as she recalls it. To me this made the story very insular and claustrophobic and kept me wanting to know more.

I'd say this is a good read, but it made me feel creeped out. Just what a good psychological thriller should do.

Charles Bukowski was born in Andernach, Germany in 1920 and brought to America at the age of two. Eighteen or twenty books of prose and poetry, Bukowski, after publishing prose in Story and Portfolio, stopped writing for ten years. He arrived in the charity ward of the Los Angeles County General Hospital, hemorrhaging as a climax to a ten year drinking bout. Some say he didn't die. After leaving the hospital he got a typewriter and began writing again—this time, poetry. He later returned to prose and gained some fame with his column, Notes of a Dirty Old Man. After 14 years in the Post Office he resigned at age 50, he says, to keep from going insane. He now claims to be unemployable and eats typewriter ribbons.

Using the city as a backdrop for his work, Bukowski wrote prolifically, publishing over fifty volumes of poetry and prose. He died in San Pedro, California on March 9, 1994. His books are widely translated and posthumous volumes continue to appear.

A great collection

The very first story in this collection solidified this work and the author as more than the average writer for me. The lead story for which this book is named is the best story in the whole collection. It shows the power of Bukowski like no other story can. While so much of the rest of this book is filled with his self-righteous condemnation of the world that hasn't seen the "truth" as he has, the lead story stands out as a really beautiful and outstanding story. This book is worth the price of purchase for that story alone.

Of course the rest of the book is filled with the wonderful Bukowski filth and flare for the seedier sides of life which makes for a great read as well. Life In A Texas Whorehouse and Six Inches are just fun stories that are great reads that make you feel like you need a shower after reading.

The problem I have is with stories like The Gut-Wringing Machine which is another story where you get to see how delusional everyone else is that hasn't seen the light like Bukowski has. I have no problem with this or any other author exposing normal folks delusions about there own mediocre existence, but I generally like to have the writers exposing these delusions or our society to be a little more introspective themselves.

This is a great collection of stories that will entertain and make the reader cringe at the same time. This entire work has the blunt charm and brazen language that makes this author wonderful to read. Other than Ham On Rye this is his most powerful work.

Raw, Raunchy, Buk.

Chuck Buk, what more to say. Raw, Raunchy, Buk. Never got over himself. Never got over writing it all down. Never got over being drunk, I guess. This is the 1st part, "Tales of Ordinary Madness" is the 2nd part, BUY BOTH. Use them for BATHROOM READING if nothing else, I do, and for reading on transit on the way to work, and at lunchtime at work eating and reading at my desk. My co-workers do not know...

Intriguing

For those who do not have time and/or focus to read an entire book from cover to cover, these short stories are perfect. You can pick it up and read a few, do something else, then return and not missed a thing. The stories themselves are very well written, intriguing and creative. The way Bukowski incorporates his own dark experiences and thoughts with embellishments is what make him such a good read. Highly recommend!
