Practical Approach to Innnovation

This book blends narrative and practical applications on innovation to convincingly make a point: creativity isn't just innate. It's something we learn, we work toward, and something rewarded by practice. While that may sound obvious, Dr. Ness illustrates that the perspectives (or "frames" in her words) we adopt throughout life often limit our ability to observe and innovate. These frames have also led to many case studies in science, medicine and elsewhere where innovative breakthroughs were rejected rather than praised.

This book adopts a steady approach of explaining creativity/innovation chapter by chapter. Dr. Ness' examples show her breadth of knowledge and the history adds flare to a book that contains exercises and practical techniques throughout. It culminates like this: if a course were to be taught on innovation, this would be its guide. I thank Dr. Ness for her contribution and look forward to her future work on the subject.

The book provides a mesmerizing account on the need for innovation to solve the pressing problems of human health and wellness. It introduces a range of tools that can help us come up with innovative solutions to demanding issues. Very carefully selected real-life examples from all corners of human evolution, history, and life (ranging from pencillin discovery to social networks to every day technologies) have been used to introduce new concepts related to innovative tools. The thoroughness in explaining each of the scientific terms and constructs is impeccable. The book is uncomplicated and is comprehendible to readers with diverse interests. Must mention the exercises furnished at the end of each chapter- delightful fun challenges. In short, the book helps us highlight the latent innovation in each one of us.

In her book she describes many of the scientific discoveries in the past and how they happened because someone saw something in a new way and decided to investigate. Since the late 1990s, a distinctive cultural practice has emerged in many cities: street art, involving the placement of uncommissioned artworks in public places. Sometimes regarded as a variant of graffiti, sometimes called a new art movement, its practitioners engage in illicit activities while at the same time the resulting artworks can command high prices at auction and have become collectable aesthetic commodities. Such paradoxical responses show that street art challenges conventional understandings of culture, law, crime and art.

Street Art, Public City: Law, Crime and the Urban Imagination�engages with those paradoxes in order to understand how street art reveals new modes of citizenship in the contemporary city. It examines the histories of street art and the motivations of street artists, and the experiences both of making street art and looking at street art in public space. It considers the ways in which street art has become an integral part of the identity of cities such as London, New York, Berlin, and Melbourne, at the same time as street art has become increasingly criminalised. A book that is friendly to read

That pretty much sums up how the book felt to read. Mr. Rayner's voice and personality are captured in this short but very useful book. I have been a frustrated at every attempt I tried to draw. This book felt like a friend was at my side to help. I only wished that it were longer. A great book for the beginner. Check out his YouTube channel and you will better understand.

Ivy and Harley are content, at least for the moment, to stick to the straight and narrow, though circumstances seem to conspire against that. Between the impostor masquerading as Batman, who seems to have a violent vendetta against the girls; murderous ex-sidekicks; home renovations; and family affairs, it's hard to catch a decent break. This spotlight on the villainesses of Gotham is a great exercise in characterization. Dini deftly weaves story and dialogue together, and loads the principals with personality. Guillem March's fluid line work and dynamic paneling beautifully add dimension to story and characters. For Bat-fans, a must, and a good springboard into the newest developments in the world of Batman. --Tina Coleman

With Bruce Wayne being dead and all, three of his villains sneak into their own series

- "Bruce Wayne": - "That is Bl�dhaven."

If you feel you need a break from all the somber holy hell that's been going down in Blackest Night and Siege, then may I recommend GOTHAM CITY SIRENS? It features the Great and Wonderful Paul Dini as writer and this Spanish illustrator Guillem March, whose art is growing on me. GOTHAM CITY SIRENS, lighthearted and fun -and that word "fun" will probably soon wear out its welcome; I plan on using it a lot here - debuted along with a batch of other new titles under the Batman: Reborn banner.

The Batman is dead, long live the Batman. The Battle for the Cowl arc ends with Nightwing's assumption of the Dark Knight's mantle, and this inevitably impacts Gotham City, and one fallout is that we get a whole mess of new comic book titles: BATGIRL, RED ROBIN, BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM (also written by Paul Dini), and, of course, BATMAN & ROBIN. Meanwhile Batwoman takes over in DETECTIVE COMICS. And then we have GOTHAM CITY SIRENS which features three foxy femme fatales teaming up not to necessarily fight crime but just to hang out and do fun femme fatale things. Think of them as a more lighthearted, less psychotic Secret Six.

Catching up with Catwoman, it's key that you know she's had a traumatic time of it of late, what with her heart having gotten ripped out by Hush (but then she got better, largely because magic is real in the DC Universe). Still what we see now isn't the same Selina Kyle we're used to. Catwoman finds herself still very much in a weakened state and she almost gets taken out permanently by a third-rate super-powered thug, until Poison Ivy intervenes. And that's how the partnership starts, and Harley Quinn soon gets in the mix. But, first, before these gals officially become a crew, Harley and Ivy feel that Selina should demonstrate her loyalty to them by revealing Batman's true identity. How does Selina Kyle get around that one?

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS Vol. 1: UNION collects the first seven issues of the series, and the premise is a lark and catchy enough that Marvel promptly ushered out MARVEL DIVAS (*coughripoffcough*). There's always this fun caper element around Selina Kyle and Harley Quinn is simply bent, and they offset the much moodier Poison Ivy. Another neat thing in this series is the emergence of the rehabilitated Edward Nigma (a.k.a. the Riddler) as a crime solver in his own right. And nothing gets the seal of approval like trading crime theories with the Caped Crusader himself. How clever is Mr. Nigma? He quickly figures out, with regards to this new Batman, that something is rotten in the state of Gotham.

Paul Dini still finds space here and there to explore the characters' darker side. Because everyone here comes with deep-seated psychological baggage. But I relish that this series means to not take itself seriously. I like that we get a peek into the villain(ess)'s world. Who woulda thunk it that there were such niche specialists as, say, the Broker (he finds and sells secret villain hideouts) and the Carpenter (she builds or fixes up villain lairs)? I, for one, wouldn't mind if the cute Carpenter (real name Jenna) becomes a recurring character. She builds the girls an impressive headquarters, and then blows the money paid for the gig on Vegas. What's not to love?

In these seven issues, our sexy crew does tangle with bad guys here and there, most notably with the low-rent Bonebreaker, with Hush, and the Joker. Surprisingly, the most effective storyline deals with the tragic villain dwarf Gaggy. Oh, that poor bitter dwarf.

When Bruce Wayne starts painting the town red with Harley Quinn, you didn't think Mr. J would stand around and do nothing, did you? And never mind that Bruce Wayne is supposed to be deaders. Still, when the Joker comes calling, this puts Harley Quinn in a position. She and the Joker have called it quits, but she still harbors lovey-dovey feelings for the demented clown prince of crime. It's not that startling that when Ivy and Selina have had enough of the Joker's homicidal attentions and decide to settle scores once and for all, that Harley would hem and haw and suggest an alternate option: "What about we serve him a restraining order?"

Paul Dini, who'd put his own spin on our leads when he was doing BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, comes to this series already with a feel for his cast. Most of us know that Dini actually created Harley Quinn for BATMAN: TAS. The series' tone is breezy and it feels like the reader is hanging out with the girls, soaking in their misadventures. Even though Ivy does sometimes come across as the wet blanket or the den mother. I guess hardcore environmentalists just have a hard time letting their hair down. Guillen March's style, light and not quite cartoony, fits the relaxed vibe, and he draws sensual women like it's his superpower. Some of the provocative poses in which he puts our three girls, well, you don't get that limber without agonizing thru some seriously advanced yoga. The girls look good. This series looks good. Paul Dini is still Great and Wonderful.

Being a Batman geek, it doesn't take long to love Harley Quinn. One thing I love about this comic is that you can hear Arleen Sorkin's voice coming out of every one of Harley's speech bubbles. Not that Ivy and Catwoman aren't lovable and dangerous) too. This gives you some nice up-close-and-personal relationships with all three women, along with a section focusing on a Batman (Nightwing)/Riddler team-up. With everyone else in the Batverse going to hell with their lives, it's nice to see the, by comparison, relaxed lives of the ladies as they make their own headquarters.

Paul Dini's writing is great, of course, and nobody understands Harley like her creator. And some of the lines, like Harley's "A lot of crazy thoughts go through your head just as you're about to be stabbed to death by an angry dwarf." and the "Joker"'s "Shh! Be vewy, vewy quiet. I'm hunting wascawwy wenches.", are just precious. Not to mention the fact that we finally get to see Harley's family. The "Gaggy" storyline seemed a bit odd at first, but I looked it up, and the guy really did exist way back in the early comics age, so I guess it works.

I wasn't quite sure about Guillem March's art at first, being used to Jim Lee's work on Hush, but I'm adjusting to it. You gotta love a lot of his expressions, especially. Ivy's innocent expression when admitting that she gave away thirty million dollars to charity, and Harley's ecstasy upon seeing her neice and nephew ("HI, MONKEYS!") are fantastic.

If you find that Batman's villains actually more interesting than the caped crusader himself, I'd call this a must-buy.

These 3 are a Perfect Team-Up!

This is nothing serious but a lot of fun. Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn decide to become roommates because things are so unstable in Gotham right now and basically they are good guys, well at least they are fighting the bad guys. This takes place during a timeline I've never read before with Dick as Batman, though he only has a few appearances in this volume. Hush is masquerading as Bruce Wayne and since I haven't read the Hush series I'm vague on that background also but enough information is given that this was easy to jump into. Each issue is pretty much a stand-alone story though there is enough of a running thread to keep some continuity going. The girls find lots of trouble and end up going head to head with Boneblaster, bickering amongst themselves, the Riddler, the Joker, Hush and more human villains. The all-star cast also includes cameos by Zatanna, Damian Wayne, The Broker, Alfred and Talia Al Ghul. I loved the art; it is just gorgeous and these three villainesses are a perfect team-up.

The Cleverest Caper of Them All!

This true story set in Victorian London in 1855 is a beauty of a read. With Michael Crichton weaving his magic over the scene and Edward Pierce, mastermind and protagonist, we have an unbeatable combination. The author does wonders describing authentic period scenes and showing us the huge divide between the English middle class and the wretched poor in Victorian times.
Edward Pierce wants 12,000 pounds sterling that will be sent by rail to fund the Crimean War. The obstacles are huge. It takes four keys to get to and unlock the safe. This was before the days of nitroglycerine, so the safe could not be blown, and it was too heavy to carry away. All four keys are held by separate persons and must be found and copied. The thieves have to get the payload unseen off of a moving train. Mr. Pierce has a hazy background, presents himself as a wealthy traveling businessman with a fine home in London, a well-dressed gentleman with an appreciation of the finer things. As we get to know him better, we learn he has nerves of steel, a quick and clever wit, and is relentless planner with infinite patience. He is blessed with a mysterious mistress, Miriam, whose acting abilities could put Meryl Streep to shame. The suspense and tension as Pierce and his accomplice, Robert Algar, work for a solid year on their plan is riveting. Naturally, when the heist takes place, even the most careful plans have to change with unforeseen circumstances. Will they get away with it? Read it and see.
The author puts us in the skins of Victorian people of the time. For instance, the police department is only 25 years old. London citizens were accustomed to being very hands-on when a crime is committed. Not like today when one's first thought is to call the police. If a criminal was observed picking a pocket, there would likely be a great hue and cry by the nearest citizens and all would chase the thief until they caught him. Only then, would they call the police. A married woman was the "property" of her husband. This of course, is abominable for her human rights, but if she is caught say counterfeiting money, her husband goes to jail, not her. After all, he is responsible for his property.
"The Great Train Robbery" was made into a movie in the late '70s with Sean Connery as Mr. Pierce. One way or another, I am going to see it. This is a great read and a well-done social history of one of the most fascinating men of the age. Highly recommended.

Crichton's writing skills are truly amazing. After you read other books written by this famous author, you will not believe that this book has been written by him. The reason that I say this, is because when I started reading the first few pages, I thought I had ordered the wrong book. With an old English writing style, you will be amazed at how he can use various different writing styles, and still produce a fantastic book.

The story is exciting in its own right, but Crichton takes it to a whole new level.

Outstanding Retelling of the Legendary Caper

Drawing heavily from court records and testimony, Chrichton's novel of historical fiction recreates the ingenious planning and execution of perhaps the most famous crime in British history. It's a novel in a very loose sense of the word, since throughout the book, Chrichton stops the proceedings to explain Victorian social customs for several pages at a time. But this is not a complaint at all, for the details on dog fighting, rats, gender roles, fear of premature burial, chimney sweeps, tipping servants, the Crimean War, safecracking, and most importantly urbanization and railroads, are all integral to the crime, and fascinating historical tidbits in their own right.
Central to the entire crime is the understanding that in the 1855, there was no such thing as dynamite or other explosives, so safes really were impregnable without keys or unlimited to time to pick them. Thus, the robbery of the monthly gold shipment that traveled by rail to France to pay for the Crimean War was deemed inconceivable, as opening the safes required four keys which were held in three separate locations. However, along comes Edward Pierce, a safecracker and master con artist who wanted that gold. The book tells how using an incredible array of scams, assistants and associates, misdirection, boldness, and quick thinking, he obtains copies of the four keys and embarks on the theft of the century. Crichton does this is a fairly documentary style for the most part, however the dialogue amongst the criminals sparkles with period underworld slang (all of which he stops to explain).
The story is recounted with continual reference to the trial, so its clear from the get go that the plot was successful, yet somehow the plotters were caught. Even knowing this in advance, the suspense is maintained throughout as the plotters encounter unexpected difficulties, last minute roadblocks, and increased police attention. And despite this knowledge of the trial, the ultimate outcome is shocker. I can't say how closely Chrichton adhered to the facts of the plot, but the social context of mid-19th century England he puts it in is certainly well researched and accurate. Sure to please fans of of the David Mamet films House of Games, The Spanish Prisoner, The Heist, and of course the classic George Hill movie, The Sting.

A book you can actually cook with

A really well-researched book with recipes I will actually make. THE HOBBIT is a favorite of mine and I'm always worried when people try to make a buck off of a trend or something well-loved. The author clearly knows her stuff. It's not just food with Bilbo's name slapped on it. This is a historically-accurate book, with food you can still easily cook, that connects the food and appreciation for food in THE HOBBIT to Tolkien's own experiences growing up on rations. It's an amazing concept. The photos are stunning. The food is very comfort-driven. She also offers alternatives for gluten-free folks, vegans, and others with food preferences. Love it!

Delicious, Different and a Delight.

What a delight! We've made 15 of the recipes so far and have absolutely loved them. I especially like the suggestions for using the left overs - very economical and sensible. I'm an old fashioned cook (I use recipes that date back four generations in my family) and love the wholesome, country style goodness of these recipes.

As someone else mentioned, I did notice a type-o and wish that the editing had been more careful. In the "Strawberries and Cream Bread" the ingredients call for 1/2 cup heavy cream, but the text mentions 1 cup heavy cream. I believe the 1/2 cup measurement is correct. At least that's what I used this morning and the bread turned out moist, light and delicious.

Some of the ingredients are a bit unusual (at least these days), but my local chain grocery store has had everything. The meat department just had to order the rabbit and oxtail for me, but everything else has been in stock.

One doesn't have to be a Hobbit fan to appreciate these recipes. This is down-home country cooking at its best.

I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Tolkien

Usually when I get a cookbook I just skim through the recipes, but when An Unexpected Cookbook came in the mail I sat down and read through every recipe step by step. Not only am I excited to make some delicious Hobbit inspired meals from these recipes, but I also learned a whole lot about Victorian-era food and cooking, and what types of things Tolkien would have eaten throughout his life. There's a lot of personality and humor mixed in throughout the steps of the recipes, which makes them more entertaining to read than any cookbook I've encountered before. The suggestions for how to reuse leftovers in other recipes is also a plus. This is a really cute and engrossing cookbook! I'd recommend it to anyone who likes Tolkien!
