An enjoyable indictment

Tufte makes a cogent case against PowerPoint in this sleek, catalog-sized volume, blaming it for, among other things, the Columbia disaster. He recommends paper handouts as an alternative for anyone presenting serious science, numbers-intensive business, or anything else requiring thought. Does he go a bit overboard? Certainly. But that's what makes the book fun rather than pedantic. Everyone in my PhD program has read it at some point with great interest, pondered it for a while, and then reverted to using PowerPoint. C'est la vie.

However, before you buy this, realize that this volume is also a chapter in Tufte's latest full-sized design book, Beautiful Evidence. If, like me, you enjoy having Tufte's works on your shelves, then this excerpted edition is of little use.

About the Author
Joan Saslow is the author of a number of textbook series for adults and young adults, including "Ready to Go," "Workplace Plus," and "Literacy Plus," She was also the Series Director of "True Colors: An EFL Course for Real Communication," and of "True Voices," an EFL video course. Ms. Saslow's special interest is in distinguishing the needs of the EFL and ESL learner and creating materials appropriate for each. Ms. Saslow has taught in Chile and the United States in a variety of programs, including binational centers, academic programs, intensive language programs, and workplace programs. Ms. Saslow has been an editor, a teacher-trainer, a language learner, and a frequent speaker at gatherings of English teachers throughout the world. Allen Ascher, formerly Director of the International English Language Institute at Hunter College, has been a teacher, teacher-trainer, author, and publisher. He has taught in language and teacher-training programs in both China and the United States. Mr. Ascher has an MA in Applied Linguistics from Ohio University. Mr. Ascher is author of "Think About Editing: A Grammar Editing Guide for ESL Writers," As a publisher, he played a key role in the creation of some of the most widely used materials for adults. This book challenges the myth of the Southern mammy and other myths and attempts a richer, more complex pic ture of the lives of black women in slav ery. Drawing on historical evidence, in cluding slave narratives and the diaries and autobiographies of white Southern ers, as well as on recent scholarship on the black family, the author examines slave women's daily life, occupations, family roles, and female networks. She finds strength and resourcefulness, but denies that female slaves played a dom ineering role in their families. Her view will be of interest to scholars, especial ly those studying comparative female social roles. For most readers, howev er, the story of slave women is better told in Jacqueline Jones's comprehen sive work on black women, Labor of Love, Labor of Sorrow (LJ 3/1/85). Interesting perspective

I enjoyed this book. White was able to dispel the myths about slave women. She did so in a way that was easy to understand but at the same time, academic. I could have done without her excessive use of the word "antebellum" as slavery itself was pre-Civil War. This book has increased my desire to learn more about the abolition movement from the perspective of the slaves as well as dive deeper into the daily lives of plantation black women.

I was reading this book for an assignment in my history class. Even though it was for school, this was one of the best and most informative books that I have read that involved the history of slavery. Reading about slavery from the perspective of black women was interesting and enlightening.
