About the Author
Elizabeth Peters was born and brought up in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. in Egyptology from the University of Chicago's famed Oriental Institute. Peters was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. She lives in a historic farmhouse in western Maryland.

Completely fun!

I am always wanting new, entertaining books to read. So, when a friend recommended Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody mysteries (starting with "Crocodile on the Sandbank"), I jumped right in.
As someone else pointed out, the mystery aspect of Crocodile on the Sandbank is not the strongest part of this novel. (Don't be surprise if you guess the purpose and identity of the stalking mummy well before it is revealed.)
In every other way, this book is excellent. The characters, plot and description are delightfully entertaining. Amelia Peabody, a Victorian-era spinster of means, embarks for a tour of Egypt. But first, while in Rome, she encounters Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been "ruined" by her former lover. Amelia insists that Evelyn accompany her. Once in Egypt, they meet Radcliffe and Walter Emerson. These four characters are incredible. They have strong personalities without becoming two-dimensional characatures. The way Amelia and Evelyn relate is touching, and the way Amelia and Emerson play off eachother is classic.
I don't know much about ancient Egypt, but Elizabeth Peters provides so much fascinating description. She really seems to know what she's talking about. (In fact, she got a Ph.D. in Egyptology.)
Crocodile on the Sandbank made me want to know more about Egyptology and archaeology. It certainly made me want to read more of the beautiful descriptions and wonderfully drawn characters.

This is the first book in the Amelia Peabody Series

Once I read this one, I was hooked. A great series with fun mysteries, amazing settings and fantastic characters. I have given this book to many friends as gifts and all have loved it!
If you are new to this series, here are some things you might like to know...
Elizabeth Peters also writes under the name Barbara Michaels (not sure which is her real name). Personally, I have not been impressed by some of her other books outside of the Peabody mysteries. The Amelia Peabody books are adventure/mystery stories that take place in Egypt, in the late 1800's.

Eleanor Lavish goes to Egypt

Whenever I read Elizabeth Peter's Amanda Peabody novels, I cannot help thinking of Eleanor Lavish (played by Dame Judi Dench in a Room With A View). Remember Eleanor Lavish during the picture, proclaiming the benefits of Mackintosh Squares? Or her descriptions of Florence to Charlotte Bartlett? If you found Eleanor Lavish entertaining, you will LOVE Amelia Peabody.
Armed with a parasol, a first-aid kit, and a formidable confidence in the superiority of the British Empire and its cultural conventions, Amelia Peabody sets out for an adventure in Egypt. On her way, she rescues a fainting Englishwoman, hires a dahabeeyah to take her down the Nile to view archaeological remains, and meets the Emerson brothers. While Walter Emerson falls for our fainting Englishwoman, his older brother Radcliffe Emerson--as curmudgeonly as Amelia--begins to do battle for control of his archaeological site. His rival? Parasol-wielding Amelia Peabody, of course.
The plot, as other reviewers suggest, is purely secondary to the characters--especially Amelia. If you want to learn a little about Egypt and in the process solve a completely unsurprising mystery then you can have no better companion than the forthright Amelia Peabody. How many mysteries make you laugh out-loud at the antics of the heroine?

Excellent introduction to web development

My first impression of the book is that it's beautiful. The text is large and the pages are colorful, making it very easy to thumb through when in a hurry. When I wasn't in a hurry and sat down to read it, I found that the book almost told the entire story through pictures. The words are there and technically correct, but it's the visuals in the book that really communicate information to the reader.

I admired Duckett's approach to this book. He completely dispels with the buzzwords that glitter so many books these days. There's mention of HTML5 and CSS3, for sure, but it's done in such a way that it doesn't seem gimmicky or hyped. The title of the book itself is evidence of this. Duckett clearly doesn't want you thinking about HTML 4 vs. HTML5 or CSS 2 vs. CSS3. Instead, he wants you to understand the concepts that link together web technology and good design. Some of that is done with HTML 4 and CSS 2 while some is done with HTML5 and CSS3.

This book is really targeted at beginners without a technical background, and it does an exceptional job in serving this audience. The approach is perhaps the gentlest introduction to the concept of web programming that I've ever encountered. So gentle, in fact, I think that almost anyone could pick up this book and start to make a simple web page relatively quickly. It takes you right from creating your HTML file with a text editor, through learning HTML and CSS, all the way to deploying your file and adding Google Analytics.

Sprinkled throughout the book are useful tidbits about typography, contrast, design concepts, and even how multimedia plugins such as Flash work in conjunction with a web page. The very visual nature of the book makes picking up these concepts easy, as every piece of code is accompanied with a diagram, figure, or screenshot showing the result.

If you're an experienced web developer, you'll probably want to pass on this book since it will be far too basic. However, if you're looking for a good book to introduce web development to an inexperienced web developer, or even someone who has no experience, then this book is a great place to start.

Great for Beginners, or to Update Skills

I want to admire this book first as a book. People who want to learn how to make quilts or soups or jewelry have plenty of gorgeous books for inspiration, but books for people who want to make websites are often visually dull, even ugly. Duckett, when he fills a page with code, also gives you a photo of how that code will render on a monitor, and the pictures are just as nice as those glamor shots of butternut squash soup. The whole book is attractively designed and laid out. It's also color coordinated so you can easily track down the turquoise(html) or hot pink (css) summaries or chocolate brown background info.

That background info is very nicely done. Each page spread is like a poster clarifying things like what exactly a left-angle bracket is or just exactly how forms work. Many books in the field assume that all their readers know this stuff already, and a book for web designers that spent much time on defining serif vs. sans-serif fonts would be frustrating for most designers. This book sequesters basic info so old hands can skip it and beginners can readily find it again, as well as making it clear and memorable.

Half the book examines HTML, looking at structure, text, links, images, tables, forms, "Extra Markeup" such as comments and metadata, and multimedia elements. Each element is explained clearly with good examples, and HTML5 is included. The presentation is economical and straightforward, but lots of information is included: things like animated gifs and how to communicate with older browsers aren't often included in books suited to beginners.

The second half of the book introduces CSS, HTML5 layout, and "Practical Information" like how to tell who's coming to your site and how to organize information into a website.

The author intends this book for people learning how to build websites (and it's certainly the best book I've seen to get you started) and for people who use a content management system like WordPress but want more control over their sites. I think it also will be very useful for people who learned HTML and CSS in the past and want to get more up to date. We often see sites built with outdated code because the owners can't bring themselves to go through the learning process again. I get that -- I took a class in HTML and it was probably slightly less creative and exciting than basic statistics class. This book isn't like that. It's clear and enjoyable, and you can download all the code from the author's website if you really hate typing it.

I found this book very useful. I am a WordPress user and a cut and paste coder, who is still struggling with understanding CSS. This book starts with the basics of web design, HTML, and CSS; and ends with wire-framing, design tips, SEO, and analytics. The author is somehow able to present a wide variety of information in a clear and precise way, with large graphics and illustrations that break everything down into digestible sections.

Unlike the Dummy books, which are very simplistic and leave you with just a vague overview. This book will take a novice and beyond, and fill in the gaps and make somewhat dry coding information simple and easy to understand. The information is presented in a clear, easy to understand format. With the help of this book, CSS is finally starting to make sense.

This book is not only useful for the beginner, or web publisher that is used to using WordPress, it also makes a great reference with an easy to use index and list of CSS properties and HTML elements. This is the exact book I needed.

Most Important Book I have ever Read

This book has opened my eyes to things that I suspected intuitively but had no basis in hard fact to corroborate. This book is the number one best book I have ever read for total body, soul and spirit health. A must read for every human on the planet. I am going to buy several copies to give to family and friends with the prayer that they will read it and be at peace to discover the jewels of wisdom that Bill Gothard once again has delivered to the world. Thank God for Bill Gothard and his ministry a man truly after God's heart.

Fine Read for those seeking bibilical references to Stress and its mitigation

The author has done a very nice job of discussing several factors that play into stress, and providing (biblical) references as to how one might go about mitigating these. Though components of physiology are mentioned (eg, "the effects of guilt on the Nerve System" and other similiar sub-headings), the text is still for the layman (I got excited at the prospect of further details, but alas no exact neuro-physiological pathways nor spinal tracts are mentioned which is FINE, I just couldn't help my neurologically-curious bent due to my background ;-) ) The paper quality is top notch, and the Hard Cover edition makes for a fine coffee table text. If you enjoy the text, you might check out his Basic Seminar. A friend let me peruse it, and it was of interest as well.

Helpful Wildlife Guide

This compact guide will be helpful with SOME, but by no means all, Panama reptile and amphibian identification, but can not replace more complete bird and mammal guides for the country (birds) or region (mammals). The plastic laminate covering will help protect the guide under most weather conditions. I look forward to using it!

I didn't realize this is a one page laminated pamphlet, approximately 8 1/2 x 26 inches. It is really nice, with good photos but no detailed information. Not the book I expected.

About the Author
Gaston Leroux (1868–1927) was a French writer best known for his novel The Phantom of the Opera. Born in Paris, Leroux initially worked as a critic and court reporter for the newspapers L’�cho de Paris and Le Matin. In 1918 he formed a film company called the Soci�t� des Cin�romans. After quitting journalism to focus on writing fiction, Leroux went on to publish dozens of novels. He died at his home in Nice, France.

A fitting follow-up to "The Mystery of the Yellow Room".

If you enjoyed "The Mystery of the Yellow Room", you will probably enjoy "The Perfume of the Lady in Black". This novel was very well written by Gaston Leroux (who actually included himself as a character in the early pages of the book!). You must read "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" before attempting "The Perfume of the Lady in Black", as it is merely a continuation of the events from "Yellow Room". To say that Gaston Leroux has a few surprises in store for you with this book would be an understatement, as he gives new meanings to the events from the first book. For me to say anyting further would be unfair to a prospective reader. While "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" was a five star book without question, "The Perfume of the Lady in Black" falls just short of that lofty plateau. For those who enjoy a well-written mystery, you could scarcely do better than Gaston Leroux.

This villain won't stay dead

I've watched many a Hollywood movie with a villain who won't die. Gaston Leroux has created just such a human monster: Frederic Larson - thief, murderer, escape artist, and master of disguise.

Larson appeared first in The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1908), then in The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1909). Both are early examples of Golden Age detective fiction, and both are classic locked room mysteries - but they're hardly defined by these categories. Leroux's style is uniquely eccentric and flamboyant.

The Perfume of the Lady in Black is set in a fortified medieval castle on the Cote d'Azur. While sunshine and flowers are generally cheerful things, in this Gothic atmosphere the glaring sea, the blazing sunlight, and the overwhelming aroma of fiercely colorful blossoms take on sinister significance. With everyone wearing sunglasses, there's an uneasy sense of uncertain identities. And in truth, there may be a murderer in their midst...

A sense of dread and confusion hangs over the narrative - only intensified by the odd behavior of the hero - the supremely intelligent amateur detective and journalist Rouletabille. This teenage prodigy is a bundle of nerves and emotions. His feelings for his mother rival a character out of Proust (whose masterpiece was in the future). And his feelings for his father are frankly Oedipal (though Leroux had probably not read Freud).

I dare not even hint at the plot, because the tangled and tortured relationships among the main characters must remain a secret for you to discover. Suffice it to say that the book is a feast of crime, deception, love, passion, and psychological terror. With occasional flashes of humor.

And the description of the fragrance of the Lady in Black is unforgettable. I doubt if there's ever been a more sensuous description of a woman's scent.

I really liked this edition (Dedalus). There's an afterword instead of in a preface - no risk of spoilers! And the analysis of the book, the author, and his contribution to world literature is very well done.

Fantastic Sequel to The Mystery of the Yellow Room

This is a great mystery, but you need to read the book before it, "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" (also a great read). Both are a lot of fun, especially remembering that these were written over a hundred years ago. I can see why the author Gaston Leroux was influential to the likes of Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr, among others.

Clear and precise.....even I can understand it.

I am a Hemingway fan and I don't care what all those snooty college professors say. I also enjoy clean, crisp, clear language. Trouble is he makes me angry because I keep thinking "Hey! That's the way I would have said it too."
Nice stuff and much easier to read and understand than Faulkner. I think Hemingway and Cormac McCarhty would have gotten along fine sitting in a bar.
But maybe not.

More of a giant review article than a teaching textbook.

Not the best, not the worst. The book does not address big concepts adequately and absolutely requires a classroom or Wikipedia to break those down, The reading is chock full of detailed mechanisms that don't really do much to explain the big developmental concept that the author is trying to teach. Instead, you end up caught up in the details and don't even realize what he's talking about.

Overall, this isn't so much a textbook inasmuch as it is a gigantic review article that lists what's going on in the field. Understanding what those lists mean in terms of the big picture is up to you and your professor.

Required Textbook for upper division biology class

I bought this textbook for my upper division college Developmental Biology class. I've only read the first 5 chapters of this book. I must say: the organization is pretty good, and it is fairly easy to read. I bought the loosed-leaf version at my school bookstore for $88 with tax and then returned it because Amazon is much cheaper AND this is the hardcover version. The pictures inside the book are really good and very high quality in this book. There is a summary section after every chapter, and this is helpful to brush up on the things that you just read. My professor just uses the figures for her lecture (I'm pretty sure that the company who owns this textbook allows you to buy PowerPoint versions of this book to present to students). The PowerPoint version contains all of the figures in the textbook, and my professor mainly tests us on the figures because they practically detail the entire chapter.

Pros: My favorite thing about this book is the Signaling Pathway section because not only do they provide a schematic picture of it, the textbook also has a simplified version (which is the part you will probably remember later on in life).

Cons: the book tries to add some humor. I don't think it's funny, and it doesn't help me remember. Luckily, these "opinions" are like 1 sentence every few pages, so it's not much. Maybe the humor might be enjoyable to others, this might help you remember. It didn't help me because I am really bad a reading comprehension so not much is funny to me.

Great overview of the subject

Its been 2 weeks into the semester, and I only have good things to say about this text.
The outline that Gilbert purposes for the subject is straightforward and quite helpful. Maybe its the nature of the subject or how Gilbert approaches Developmental Biology, but I appreciate how he writes a good amount about the historical details of previous experiments and scientist. It allows you to go on, in a sense, relive the journey to scientific progression. I also appreciate how Gilbert understands the value of diagrams and photos.
I agree with other reviews in how the textbook is more for the undergraduate level as opposed to the graduate level. However, this text does give the foundations for graduate level reading.

Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation. Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean's Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School's finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. He has been consultant to a number of corporations, including AT&T, Mobil Oil and Pacific Enterprises, as well as to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice and Labor, and the State of California. Bradford D. Jordan is Professor of Finance and Gatton Research Fellow in the Carol Martin Gatton College of Business and Economics at the University of Kentucky. He has a long-standing interest in both applied and theoretical issues in corporate finance, and has extensive experience teaching all levels of corporate finance and financial management policy. Professor Jordan has published numerous articles on issues such as cost of capital, capital structure, and the behavior of security prices.

Stuningly bad book! A terrible Kindle execution also.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is a jumble. I can't find my way through chapters logically, let alone see the logical flow of the book as a whole. It claims to have electronic links to things like spreadsheets and videos...it does not. All the links are dead. The publisher's website promises tons of content, and there's virtually nothing, and what is there is just fluff, not of any real use.

And finally, the book is not updated in any meaningful way since the 8th edition (I compared it in the library). Literally all they did was tweak the number in the problem section so you don't get the same answers. Every word of the text is verbatim, except for some very minor changes (they refer to different baseball players' salaries, or sales of expensive art auction items). So they published a "new" edition not cause there's new information, or to update the content in keeping with the 2008-present recession, or anything else of academic merit. The changes are basically cosmetic, in order to sell more books. Putting out a new edition was not just unnecessary, it was evil.

As for the Kindle execution...first, no page numbers. All books of this sort need literal page numbers, so that kindle users can follow along with the rest of the class. then, they only let you use it on two devices. One of the beauties of Kindle books is that you can bounce from device to device; your phone, your iPad, your laptop, your desktop and home and work, your Kindle, the new Kindle you had to buy because the old one got stolen, the new Kindle you bought because the newer models just came out...you get my drift. NOT with this book! You're limited to two devices. TWO! Utterly ridiculous.

In sum, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you have to, plead to get a used copy of the 8th edition, you'll learn every bit as much. What might be missing can be found on the web. Teachers...if you must assign it to students, at least have the courtesy to let students us an older edition, since the 8th is exactly the same book.

Excellent text

We use this book for both the undergraduate Intermediate Finance and MBA Introduction to Finance courses at University of Central Florida. This book is very easy to read no what your background in finance is. It serves as an excellent reference as well.
It seems there are a few people here who try to counterbalance each review that is awarded a 5-star rating with one that is a 1-star rating although their arguments do not hold water. My suggestion is to take a look at this book for yourself and simply return it if you're not happy with it. The fact the so many universities have adopted this text AND continue to use it says a lot.

This is THE book for serious study of corporate finance !

I am a student with science background. When I started my research on corporate finance, I had ZERO knowledge of investment and business ! I have tried very hard to swallow through the famous Bryley and Myers text recommended by my supervisor, and what I can conclude was : boy, is this how finance people write their text ? After beating about the bush for tens of pages, you still have no idea what they are talking about !
Thankfully this book by Ross and also another by Haim Levy save my day and correct my almost biased opinion about business academics (disorganized to the extent that can't even produce an honest and sincere introduction of finance with clarity and organized structure, that I sometimes wonder do these people know their work or not ?).
Really I don't know why some people discount Ross completely, because this is really one of the more decent and organized texts available about corporate finance. Anyone who wants to have serious learning about corporate finance should really take a look at Ross and also Haim Levy. Have patience and you will see where the author is leading you to. I am speaking from someone with ZERO background and experience in finance and business.

About the Author
Patrick Ellam was born in England, joined the army at the start of World War II then volunteered to drop alone by parachute behind the enemy lines and spent the rest of the war in the Special Operations Executive, as he described in his book Things I Remember. Then after crossing the Atlantic Ocean in Sopranino, he married June Emery and they spent 10 years in the yacht delivery business, as described in their book Wind Song. Colin Mudie was a hostage from the designer's office.

One of the Best Sea Stories Ever Written!

I happened upon this book in a trading library (as I do most of the books I read). It was tattered and all the pages were loose from the binding, but I was intrigued by the tale of two young men in a tiny boat crossing the Atlantic in the era of yachting before ammenities and electronics took over.
My boyfriend and partner/captain read it first and he was continually laughing out loud and begging to read it to me. I protested saying "You'll ruin it, if you read it out loud to me"!
The story of these two wry, guileless, enthusiastic young men is a delight for a reader that is used to reading the plodding, egocentric accounts of most sea voyage stories.
Buy this book! And try to figure out Hannibal!
