Great for building a more specialized vocabulary

I used this textbook as part of the domestic flagship program, aimed to boost your level of Russian to a 2+ before sending you for a nine-month immersion program at St. Petersburg State University. This is probably equivalent to a university level fifth-year Russian course--although I could see this book used with 3rd of 4th year. While I still find it more helpful to read the BBC in Russian or to listen to Russian radio, this book is extremely comprehensive. Dividing the presentation of vocabulary into thematic sections (education, ecology, grammar/stylistics, politics, etc) the book uses new words while reviewing important grammatical concepts. The grammar rules are simply stated with plenty of examples, sometimes making you wonder why a concept couldn't be presented so simply three years ago. I did not use the CD.
My chief complaint is the redundancy of the exercises. For as advanced as the vocabulary is, some of the grammar exercises are quite tedious. I suppose at this level, you just have to use your best judgement as to whether or not something is going to be a total waste of time. I generally skipped over the exercises requiring you to use only one of the presented verbs and opted for the write-your-own or choose-from-multiple-verbs type exercises. The reading texts for each section are very good as well as the comprehension questions.
It's hard to be a perfect textbook since language learning needs to be individually tailored in most cases (especially on the advanced level), but this book provides a lot of worthwhile material, and everyone will find something.

Disappointing

As a teacher of Russian, I used this in my 4th year Russian course. I was disappointed in the book and used it only sparingly as a result. Therefore I had to create almost all of my own materials. The book is written almost all in English, in long elaborate paragraphs of English, which is not good for a 4th or 5th year course, where you try to stay in Russian virtually always. So switching into English all of the time with the book breaks the rhythm of the class. Moreover, the chapters are poorly organized (ch 1 especially is an absolute hodge podge of unrelated topics), as if someone designed it off the top of his or her head. Just all around very disappointed in this book.

An excellent tool

Takes an interactive approach, with lessons organized thematically (geography, education, etc.). It entails a rigorous focus on building vocabulary (200 or so words per chapter) and the exercises (in the book itself, versus online, as in the first book) are well-focused to get the most out of the glossed readings and the video listening comprehension lectures on the enclosed CD.
For a student who has completed two or more years of college study, this books would be an excellent tool for selfguided study, to a point. Certainly a student can work through the readings and audio/video pieces independently, but to get the most out of the exercises, be they online or in the book, one would likely need a teacher or native language tutor.
