The stories of Ovid made visible through paintings and sculpture.

I have had no classical education, yet this book is perfectly accessible to me. Barolsky writes simply and clearly, illustrating stories of Greek and Roman mythology with paintings I have seen but not appreciated fully before. Now I see these works with new eyes and I have a better understanding of the meanings behind the stories. Then he links aspects of very different paintings together, often with a subtle sense of humor.
I like the way the author has described each artwork in short, headed paragraphs, making it easy to find descriptions of each piece and how they refer to the writings of Ovid. The illustrations are almost uniformly superb. The entire book is beautifully produced and a pleasure to return to.
This book has given me a new appreciation for classical themes in Renaissance art and in modern art inspired by it.

A Great Classic and Great Art

Anyone who has read Ovid's Metamorphoses and likes European painting and sculpture should take advantage of this beautiful book. The paintings, many masterpieces, illustrate the stories that Ovid tells, and the author's excellent texts enlighten the viewer/reader on the artists' purposes and methods. Well documented with paintings from all the great museums of the world, the book is a delight to read. I highly recommend it.
