About the Author
Jeanne Marie Neumann is an Associate Professor of Classics at Davidson College, where she has taught Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilization since 1994, and was awarded the College's most distinguished teaching award in 2005. She has conducted numerous seminars and workshops for Latin teachers at all levels of instruction, and has received national recognition for her educational outreach.

Don't Need If You Already Own �rberg's Supplementary Books

I will be returning this book, because I already own �rberg's Grammatica Latina, Latin-English Vocabulary, and the Student Guide Latine Disco. On review of the College Companion, 95% or more of it is lifted directly from these three original resources, mostly the Student Guide (and almost entirely verbatim at that), and therefore doesn't offer enough new material to justify the additional expense.
If you don't already own the other three volumes, you may want to buy the College Companion instead. However, I wouldn't because I prefer the layout of �rberg's Student Guide as it follows the format of the Familia Romana text, with the main text in the center of the page and use of margin notes to help explain the text's concepts. The College Companion eliminates this format completely, and integrates the margin notes into the main text which is much less helpful for me. Also, the College Companion works the Grammatica Latina concepts and Latin-English Vocabulary directly into each Chapter corresponding to the Familia Romana text. This is not how �rberg intended these supplementary texts to be used (i.e. as a first resort rather than last).
Read the Preface first on Amazon's "Look Inside" function before deciding which books to buy. The author is very clear that this book is really intended for the college level student, who must move through the material very quickly, and not the younger or self-taught student who has the leisure to learn at their own pace as Hans �rberg's method intends. The College Campanion short circuits �rberg's method by allowing the student to skip, or translate, directly to English without learning the Latin first the way �rberg intended.

An indispensable companion.

Makes learning AND teaching from LL: Familia Romana a breeze. The text is written such that students intuitively come to a mastery of the language, but sometimes they need to know the grammatical "why" behind the language. This is especially necessary in a classroom where grammar was glossed over, or has been poorly retained by the students (which is more commonplace than many realize).
This companion offers clear, direct explanations of every grammatical concept introduced in the text, and is supplemented with examples from the text. Students can read the appropriate section in the companion before or after the related section in the text, per their individual strengths and needs.

Indispensable!! All you want to know about the whys and hows in the excellent Orberg first book. I read the explanations after reading the text and with this textbook all becomes clear. Highly recommendable.
