Invaluable reference; Not for pleasure reading

Hays's text is not meant for everyone; hence the mixed reviews. It was not the primary source from which I gained my knowledge of statistics; however it serves as an invaluable reference. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I had little difficulty understanding the material as Hays presented it. Some of the criticisms are points well-taken; for example a lack of annotation in the power tables at the end of the book (which are still decipherable if you know what you're looking at).
This text is for the mathematically inclined-it is not a "how-to" book, rather a "why" book that thoroughly explains the theory behind a variety of popular inferential techniques. If this is the sort of knowledge you are seeking, Hays is the book for you. If you are interested in a more "common-sense" or applied approach, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

Excellent if you are not a minor in the field anymore

'Hays' is truely a classic; one of the few books that will stay close at hand as long as I work (as an applied social scientist). It did not teach me statistics, but since then the book has helped me many times to understand statistics a bit better. Don't use it as an introduction to the field. Reach for this book every time you want to know more about "why so" after you have learned "how to do".

Useful as a reference, not as a book to learn from

I agree with Van Denburg's evaluation.
I am a graduate student in Psychology, and I find the Hays text mostly illegible. His prose is dense and his explanations rely very heavily on mathematical formulae instead of real-world or logical/verbal descriptions. Furthermore, he falls into the typical "math textbook" pit of giving solutions to only the example problems that are exceptions to what one would usually encounter.
This is especially bad considering that my concentration specializes in statistical inference, and I've studied mathematics through differential equations (including linear algebra, multivariate).
Worse, Hays has a tendency to use different symbols to represent variables compared to other statistical texts (and in some cases, the rest of the world!)
Lastly, the tables that Hays has in the back of his book are not notated. He does not explain what each table represents, or what the x or y axis are. In one case, he has two entries for each lookup in the ANOVA Power of Association (omega squared) (Table XII, page 1032). Nowhere in the table does it mention what these two values are for.
It is only in one paragraph 600 pages earlier, that he explains that the two values are for alpha=0.05 and 0.01 and that n must be equal for both groups!! (page 410)
I am currently relying on several other texts to understand statistics for the social/behaviourial sciences. If you are extremely comfortable with mathematics to describe your behaviourial tests, you may find this book valuable. If you prefer a more descriptive approach, I suggest another one.

This is a fabulous book for all levels. Jen walks you through each pose step by step and also offers modifications. You can do these exercises anywhere with little to no equipment. You can randomly flip to a page and spice up any workout by adding in some of the different planks. I highly recommend this book!!!

Ultimate plank fitness is a great book for all levels. It walks you through every plank and is so easy to do at home or when your traveling and don't have a lot of resources. It's challenging yet can be used for the basics as well. Jen is an amazing instructor and I look forward to more from this author.

It is assumed that the student or reader does not have a background in electrochemistry. However, the student or reader should have taken at least an undergraduate course in materials science or physical chemistry. More material is presented in the textbook than can be covered in a one-semester course, so the book is intended for both the classroom and as a source book for further use. This book grew out of classroom lectures which the author presented between 1982 and the present while a professorial lecturer at George Washington University, Washington, DC, where he organized and taught a graduate course on “Environmental Effects on Materials.” Additional material has been provided by over 30 years of experience in corrosion research, largely at the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC and also at the Bethlehem Steel Company, Bethlehem, PA and as a Robert A. Welch Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas. The text emphasizes basic principles of corrosion science which underpin extensions to practice.

Excellent introductory text

I've bought this book for a one semester undergraduate corrosion engineering course. I must say that I'm absolutely thrilled with this book! The author has a concise and enjoyable writing style which allows for hours of continuous reading.

The book covers quite well the most fundamental topics in corrosion science. I was particularly happy with the author's coverage of polarization - a topic whose importance can't be stressed enough, and which can be quite tricky for first-timers. The Wagner-Traud models are presented satisfactorily and the Tafel extrapolation is well explained. Pourbaix diagrams must be pointed out as one of the strengths of this book, since the author essentially builds one of them from scratch - applying Nernst's equation and equillibrium constants - in a very ditatic fashion.

The books also covers important topics such as pitting, crevice corrosion (with mechanisms), coatings and inhibitors. The author also describes many corrosion science techniques, among which is AC impedance, which has been very well covered.

While this book is definitely suited as an introductory textbook, I would not recommend it as a thorough reference book for professionals. Even though this might be seen as a flaw, I've still decided to give it a 5 stars.

Well written and understandable.

I also used this book for a Corrosion Engineering course. I initially purchased it as a supplementary text after finding the required text (Jones) difficult to understand and error-prone. It has the most comprehensive description of electric double-layer theory I've seen in any text so far. It covers thermodynamics thoroughly and has an entire chapter on Pourbaix diagrams. It appropriately makes use of chemical activity in place of concentration as in some other texts. It uses the calorie instead of Joules (possible drawback?). It has nice example problems throughout the chapters and end of chapter problems with selected answers in the back. The chapter on kinetics has proved very useful to me for both theoretical and experimental aspects in that it explains mixed potential theory well and contains tables with corrosion rate data obtained from various studies. The images and diagrams are all nicely laid out. The sections within the chapters are not numbered which forces me to page around a bit to remind myself where I am in the chapter. Since purchasing this book I've browsed through about three or four other corrosion texts and still like this one the best.

it read like a middle school text book

This book went straight from the mail to the trash. I found it to be really juvenile, it read like a middle school text book. I can't discount the information and I'll give it five stars because it might very well be good for high schoolers, maybe college freshmen with no economics background, but for the serious adult trying to gain insight the real estate market: look elsewhere.
I'm completing a bachelors degree in Economics from a no-name university so...I'm no Harvard MBA but I understand that I might bring more to the table than the average reader so take or leave my advice.

Little Book, Big Impact

This concise little book packs a lot of wisdom into 120 pages or so. It quickly dispels what assumptions you have about talent and makes a compelling case for the science of building your talent. There are some great tips here, though none that are earth shattering - I have read most of these before, but it is nice to have everything condensed down to one book. The only critique is that some of the tips just read like other tips repackaged and could probably have been cut. That said, a few of my favorite tips and quotes from the book are below:

Tip #3 - Steal Without Apology - Build on other's work

Tip #11 - Don't Fall For The Prodigy Myth - Early success is poor predictor of future talent (see Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Michael Jordan, etc)

Tip #12 - 5 Ways To Pick A High-Quality Teacher Or Coach - This is great - some of the best advice in the book

Tip #30 - Take A Nap - Science says so . . .

Tip #33 - To Learn From A Book, Close It - Great advice. Don't read to retain information. If you follow this tip you will retain more information, much faster. Valuable advice.

Tip #46 - Don't Wast Time Trying To Break Bad Habits - Instead, Build New Ones - Great advice

Tip #51 - Keep Your Big Goals Secret - Why you should not share your newest dream with your friends - very interesting and helpful as well.

There are plenty of gems here that make this book a worthy buy. Just about anyone can read it in a few hours, and it could potentially change every day of the rest of your life. Hard to ask any more than that from a 120 page book - Recommended.

Practical guide based on his other book, The Talent Code

Both books say basically the same thing. But The Talent Code is more focused on telling stories and analysing research; The Little Book, with its extremely practical approach, could easily have been an appendix to The Talent Code.

So, if you want guidelines for developing a talent, buy this one. If you want a good, informative read, but which will not be so actionable, buy The Talent Code.,

This has been a truly great book in helping me improve my skills

This has been a truly great book in helping me improve my skills, particularly piano practising. The results were immediate. For example, practising a section three times with 10 minutes breaks in between. It felt weird and so unreal to a point of suspecting auto-suggestion on my part. I am so glad I bought this book.
