In this, his only novel, author Tung Yueh (1620-1686), a monk and Confucian scholar, picks up the slapstick of the original tale and overlays it with Buddhist theory and bitter satire of the Ming government's capitulation to the Manchus. After a nod to Journey's storyteller format, Tung carries Monkey's quest into an evocation of shifting psychological states rarely found in premodern fiction. An important though relatively unknown link in the development of the Chinese novel and window into late Ming intellectual history, The Tower of Myriad Mirrors further rewards by being a wonderful read.
Shuen-fu Lin is Professor of Chinese literature at the University of Michigan. Larry Schulz holds a Ph.D. in Chinese intellectual history from Princeton University and has published his dissertation, "Lai Chih-te and the Phenomenology of Change," and articles on traditional Chinese medicine. He is currently a senior officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

Journey Through the Psyche of a Mystical Monk

Almost four hundred years before movies like "The Sixth Sense" shocked audiences with surprise endings, Tung Yueh's "Tower of Myriad Mirrors" was blowing away mid 17th century China with its own original brand of psyche-out plot twists. "Tower" was a gripping tale to its originally intended audience, and the story has stood the test of time and is read to this day due to its fantastic imagery and imaginative method of imparting Buddhist theory.
I read "Tower of Myriad Mirrors" for a class in traditional Chinese literature and enjoyed it thoroughly. I have an avid interest in traditional and contemporary Chinese literature, but a serious background in this genre is not necessary to understand and enjoy "Tower..." All that is needed is good concentration and patience, and perhaps a quick online look at background information on Mahayana Buddhism. The story may appear confusing and disjointed at times, but if you persevere, you will find that everything comes together beautifully in the last chapter. Keep in mind that it is imperative to read the forward - it provides the necessary orientation needed to understand the story.
"Tower's" protagonist, a somewhat wayward monk named Monkey (who has, in fact, the outward appearance of an ape) embarks on a fantastical journey in search ways to help his master reach India, where they are to procure Buddhist scriptures to bring back to China. Tung Yueh wrote this 16-chapter novella (most Chinese novels are in excess of 100 chapters) as a supplement to the famous narrative "Journey to the West" as a way to explore the psyche of the Monkey character. It is elegantly written and conjures imagry that is beautiful and exotic as well as brutal and violent.
Written in 1640, "Tower..." is an excellent example of the traditional vernacular stories that were widely used to relate the messages of Buddhism to the masses. To hold the attention and stay in the memory of common Chinese, the stories often involve fantastic imagery, scores of monsters and evil beings, beautiful women, and impossible feats of magic - all of which are evidenced in "Tower..." The Buddhist message of "Tower" is that one must strive to overcome the demons of desire within oneself - and this message is delivered by means of a fascinating journey through a dream world conjured up Monkey's mind.
While "Tower of Myriad Mirrors" is not an easy read, it is a rewarding one. This edition is well translated and provides many helpful footnotes that will enable readers not well-versed in the background of Chinese vernacular religious stories or Buddhism to understand. Approach it with an open mind and perhaps a willingness to look up some information on Mahayana Buddhism, and you won't be disappointed.

Schulz. Tung Yueh (1620-1686) provides an illuminating example of Chinese literature written to both entertain and enlighten with its mythological cast of characters. This precursor to the modern novel will prove especially fascinating and informative for students and scholars of Chinese fiction as a specialized literary form.

Amazing primer on style and rhetoric

This is a tremendous book that attempts to revive a now lost method for being deliberate about consuming and producing prose.

The couple of two-star reviews are missing the virtues of Analyzing Prose. This is not a rehash of Revising Prose at all. Revising Prose outlines the Paramedic Method, which is really major first aid for bloated dead-fish prose. He calls it the Paramedic Method for a reason.

Analyzing Prose is a practical extension of the arguments that Lanham develops in Style: An Anti-Textbook, which is also an amazing book. Analyzing Prose walks through various ways of classifying prose styles and as a result gives writers something to emulate and practice. Both of these books make the passionate plea to start to take real joy in words and language again, to reject the utilitarian and drab argument that says all prose must be clear, simple, and functional.

If you ever read a line of Shakespeare and marveled at his gorgeous and clever parallel constructions, and inversions; if you love the first few sentences of Lolita; if you noticed Abraham Lincoln's repetition at Gettysburg--"we can not dedicate -- we can not consecrate -- we can not hallow..."--then you will certainly appreciate this book, and appreciate all those others even more.

worth the effort

A most difficult climb, as attention to detail is a must, and a cocktail of what looks like and is Greek confounds. However, chapter 9 rewards the climb, where a replacement for the pattern laid down by Aristotle is proposed, several tables that outline a broader and less judgmental classification for prose: not simply good or bad, factual or sophistry, but rather a range between dreaming, the ordinary, and drama, a range between lucid, ethical, and aesthetic, and how a writer or speaker or reader or listener may move between any of these, depending.

(There is a (brief) glossary of the Greek, and the author helpfully reminds the reader on occasion what the chiasmus and whatnot mean.)

Scribners: reprint this book!

I taught college writing classes for 17 years and have been an editor for a computer software company for nine. So far, Lanham's "Analyzing Prose" is the only completely reliable book about writing and language I have come across. It's not an easy book. As Lanham says, "We are simply not trained to look at the words on the page." And to read this book, you have to look at the words on the page. If you're up for the challenge, get this book. It won't be easy to find. It won't be cheap once you've found it. It won't be easy to read once you buy it. But as you realize how rewarding looking at words can be, really looking at them and not just through them, you will thank me over and over again for writing this review. And you will thank Richard Lanham over and over again for writing this splendid book.

Excellent introduction to nuclear strategy in the Cold War

Terrific and concise summary of the Cold War, specifically from the angle of nuclear strategy. The book is both highly dense and concise. Thus, it is challenging at times and does not qualify as leisure reading. Either way, it is one of the most objective works I have ever read on the Cold War and covers, not only the evolution of nuclear arms and arms control diplomacy, but also the evolution of the intellectual debate underlying the Cold War. This book challenges the myth-making and varnishing that goes on both sides. One finds that the Cold War was not a simple matter of doves vs hawks. The contradictory logic of nuclear strategy meant that arms control specialists, at times, advocated large buildups. Other paradoxes like these came to define the Cold War and challenge simplistic notions of liberal vs conservative thought. Only in this setting could the ultimate hawk, Ronald Reagan, envision a largely-pacifist and semi-utopian vision of a world free of the threat of nuclear missiles. The book also covers highly technical matters, such as the various types of missile systems and strategic policies, complete with mind-numbing acronyms: ALCMs, CBMs, EMP, CDE, CSCE, etc. A student of the Cold War will find Mr. Smoke's research exhaustive. Sadly, Mr. Smoke reportedly committed suicide. With this book, he has made a lasting contribution to the literature and has provided young national security analysts with a valuable introduction to the complexities of the Cold War.

Excellent treaty on luxury management

I'm a profane in luxury brand management but have interest on learning about it. It provides a theoretical but clear guide about the rules by which this industry works, includind brand stretching, risk management, luxury VS premium, pricing, distribution, communication, internal management, etc. It formulates rules that before were just implicit. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 for 3 reasons: 1) the overuse of Louis Vuitton as an example. 2) The habit of adding bits and shades to the definition of "luxury" all along the book instead of doing it on a single chapter (though i admit it's a complex concept) and 3) using debatable statements such as classifying BMW as a proper luxury brand but not Mercedes-Benz, even though it's obvious they are direct competitors. Apart from these minor details, a great book nonetheless.

Exzellent book on luxury marketing but kindle version is low quality

I downloaded the book three days ago. This is certainly an outstanding book on luxury and according marketing strategies. However the Kindle-version has terrible flaws, no table of content and no internal references. Also the first chapter (anti-laws of luxury marketing) lacks completely.

Very good book for classroom and for practice!

I have used this book in the classroom as the primary 'text' as well as recommended this book for use in business real-world practice. It is very good for either purpose. The students enjoyed the 'text' as it is comprehensive, easy-to-read for the international student who is ESL, and provocative in thought as it challenges the reader to think outside the typical marketing 4P's structure. For practice, it provides enough theory to answer the 'why' while giving good examples that provide the application. I will - and am - definitely using this book again as well as continuing to recommend it. I have looked at a number of books that could be used in a classroom setting and this one is, by far, the best. This book is a keeper that will stay on a marketer's shelf - for future reference - for a long time.
