A great film.

Bought and read the book which confirmed that Paddy Chaefsky was a genius and the film of the same title was largely Chavefsky's work, thinly based on the plot of the book. If you get the dvd of the film listen to the director's comments- which I found fascinating. A great film.

Barbara Foley is full-time professor of at Union County College, Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA. She has presented at numerous workshops, conferences, and colleges throughout the United States and Mexico, specifically in the areas of listening, CALL, grammar, communicative classroom activities, Generation 1.5 students, and Extensive Reading. Her many publications include English in Action, Grammar in Action, Listen to Me, Now Hear This, and workbooks for the Heinle Picture Dictionary.

Elizabeth Neblett teaches ESL full-time at Union County College in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In addition to teaching, Liz observes new faculty and helps with student and faculty problems. A brief but Interesting read

I've been reading and watching anything that includes Dr. Lustig's work for about three years now.

Most of it is predicated on what food chemistry does to us and our biomachinery. And I find it very interesting, scary at times and well supported by the cited research.

He has an insightful original way to look at things in an obvious and intuitive way.

Its a more complex way of looking at us rather than as calorie consumers and burners. "A calories isn't just a calorie.." It might be a building block, or a poison, scaffolding or a drug.

If the biomachinery gets damaged or clogged, basically it stops working and can spin out of control leading to sickness or worse. The calories might go unburned, or end up as excess body fat.

He also talks about things I never thought about, like it takes 13 trys to "teach" a baby that something savory isn't a poison and they will slowly adapt to eating it. But it only takes one try to "teach" them to eat something sweet.. but you can't sustain life on "sweets" alone. But we are "hardwired" to trust and consume "sweet" things... we are cognitively defenseless against them. They do bad things to our bodies, in moderate quantities, which we have to learn to avoid.

He talks about how it takes 18 days cold turkey to break an addiction, and the same goes for a dietary craving like for sugar.

He's even philosophical in that it takes time to build up a palate of savory foods we will regularly consume, but no time to consume almost "anything" that had been sweetened.. even if its totally unnatural and traditionally absurd. Europeans visiting the US are revolted by the uncommonly pre-sweetened foods in America.. but quickly develop a "tolerance" and then "addiction" to them.

That leads me to wonder if we can "forget" our palate of savory foods just as easily and degenerate our diet into cheaper unsupportive, even dangerous foods, laced with ever increasing amounts of sugar.. almost like a pain killer for hunger. Addicted to the pain killer.. we seem to consume ever increasing amounts of it, increasing our weight and hurting our health.

This eBook takes a practical look at what we eat, and brings awareness to just "how much" sugar is in common foods you'd find in the Supermarket. It provides practical suggestions for countering and taking control of how much sugar your consuming. And tries to enable you to steer back towards something a little more normal.

The problem is we generally "don't know what is Normal" and this book tries to explain that.

Its not a long book, its not a "Calorie counters" guide or an Index to every food and how much sugar is in it. It is not that sort of book. Rather it gives common examples everyone is likely to encounter.. and then proceeds to describe strategies for making better choices, strategies for balancing the situation or avoiding it altogether.

It is also definitely not an "extremist" book. Some foods listed have 10 or 20 grams of sugar in a single Serving. But being aware of that, you can consider the consequences of that and perhaps choose not to flood your overworked liver with more for the rest of the day. Its the overworked state that can lead to fatty liver disease and high insulin levels that can lead to dementia, heart disease and diabetes. Long after the sweet taste has faded from your taste buds your cells are still waging war with itself to properly process, or deal with all the excess sugar in your blood.

Dr. Lustig is working on a follow up eBook Cookbook that will build upon the material in this book - to teach a new generation of people who grew up in the 80's and 90's and who never learned to cook, how to cook and take control of the ingredients in the foods that they eat.

To teach those who might have had their palate stunted and never fully developed enough to ensure a healthy diet. Or for those who might have had their palate regressed due to a busy schedule and convenience foods, or who find it hard to afford foods that are more nutritious than merely sweetened cardboard. I look forward to reading that book.

But for now this is a very good preamble, a starters guide to doing simple things, like reading and interpreting food labels with a skeptical and critical eye. And thinking about how to plan ahead to avoid mindlessly moving from one meal to the next feeling out of control, unconscious and unaccountable for what we consume.

excellent blueprint for shopping, cooking and eating strategy

I'm a huge fan of Robert Lustig's work. It's incredibly courageous and pioneering. Kudos to him for going back to school to get a law degree (after building a successful pediatric practice in medicine) in order to actually effect real large scale change toward the solution. This is a great tool for people to use to get started making changes on a personal level, in their own kitchens. As a personal trainer and nutrition coach for over ten years, I'll be recommending this ebook as a resource for my clients.

I had no idea how much sugar was in the food we eat. Since we gave up on sugar we cleaned out our pantry and were amazed atbhowit was in a lot of our foods. One Dole fruit cup has 17grams of sugar!! The Belly Fat Cure is another terrific book.

About the Author
Chip Kidd is a designer/writer in New York City. His book cover designs for Alfred A. Knopf, where he has worked nonstop since 1986, have helped create a revolution in the art of American book packaging. He is the recipient of the National Design Award for Communications, as well as the Use of Photography in Design award from the International Center of Photography. Kidd has published two novels, The Cheese Monkeys and The Learners, and is also the author of Batman: Death By Design and the coauthor and designer of True Prep, the sequel to the beloved Official Preppy Handbook. His 2012 TED Talk has been viewed 1.2 million times and is cited as one of the “funniest of the year.” He is most recently the author of the bestselling GO: A Kidd’s Guide To Graphic Design.

Subject doesn't translate as well in Ereader format.

Though I do not recommend this in ebook format because of the inability to have the graphic illustration and the commentary on screen at the same time, I never the less found the subject extremely interesting. Chip Kidd shares his reasoning for his choice of book cover art. I thought the method by which he selected the type of cover to be fascinating, and it gave me some insight into why I am attracted to covers in the bookstore and library. Perhaps I am missing out by not having a color ereader.....

Reverse spinoff

Chip Kidd is a very lucky man. Right out of graphic design class he was hired into publishing in New York City, and has been a book cover designer at the same firm ever since. He works with the biggest names and gets seemingly free creative reign. He has collected some of his best covers, and the real world design elements that inspired them, into a short, fast little book you can read in an hour or two.

Kidd created a continuum, a horizontal line that goes from clarity to mystery, rating various elements of daily life according to how much work it takes to understand them. He measures his book covers by how much they might benefit from extreme clarity to extreme mystery.

The medium is the message, so you would expect a book cover designer to publish a book. Unfortunately, this is written as belonging to some other medium. Every image is accompanied by a short paragraph or two, more of a narration than a narrative. The images on the opposite page would have much more impact on a large screen, particularly in an e-book, where you can’t see the image at the same times as the text. The whole effort fairly screams to be a 50 minute slide show, with Kidd narrating. He would be far more entertaining than the book.

And so it is. This is the print extension of his TED talk, for those who need a paper version of the video available online. The video is much more fun.

Informative

This is a timely book for those who are considering making money on the Internet writing blogs or hosting educational web sites. It makes a good point that there is a niche for everyone who is competent and authentic, to teach what they love. It is blurry, however, on how much compensation one can expect from such sources with respect to the investment. It did seem to me that the author has a good background education on what he does, has spent many years perfecting his style, and spends several hours actualizing himself and participating in forums, in order to make *a little money* on the side teaching people flash animation in a time when flash animation is on its way out. I think this can be seen as a good introductory book on the subject, with good tips on where to host your web site, how to climb the ladder of Google search and which advertizing companies do a good job out there. However, those expecting to make money in this manner will also need to do extra research on their own on aspects not covered in the book.

Very useful - 4.5 stars

I found this book very helpful in the same way that I find Rob Cubbon's books useful. It was concise and to the point with tons of useful info that I clipped and saved in Evernote to refer to later as I build my educational website. I have yet to find a a book that can teach me everything I want to know about how to design, build and monetize a perfect website but this has been a helpful stepping stone. The author shared some of the mistakes along the way and I really appreciated that - that's a few less mistakes that I will make on my journey now...
